That thought had never come to mind before today reading this post. 

Is San Jose remotely close to San Diego?  

 I toured a plant in south Georgia.  They had several buildings the size of airport hangars; the houses were assembled inside those buildings.  Very impressive operation!

In a factory, I am betting.

I really have not ever wondered. 

We have a company in Wisconsin that builds them

I stopped wondering a long time ago after my first factory visit when their construction was suspect. No more doubts they're here to stay and I like them.

I would venture to guess the standards required are pretty high with regulations.  Not seen a home built except for mobiles.  My husband worked for a company that built high end mobiles and they were built really well.

It's a great concept for basic housing

We have log home makers in our area (Ward Log Homes, Katahdin Cedar Log Homes) so have toured the factory and across the border, Canadian Kent Home modular factory tours are available to see the process and how the new home owner can customize the product too. 

To be honest, no.  When I've seen them trucked down the highway, I just always assumed they were built in a factory, like a car or airplane, etc.  Once built they were shipped out, any connections of pieces to each other were done and then hooked up to utilities.

I got a lesson on this recently when we had an issues with a modular home that a buyer was purchasing.

Come to find out - the quality is actually better as they are built in conditioned space with incredibly tight quality control. Just having the wood not be exposed to the elements during the building process eliminates a lot of issues in & of itself.

I've actually seen it in person it is interesting and the modern methods are impressive

I know how they are built so I no longer have to wonder. These are not big in my market.

I have a general idea of how it's built....and I know for certain, the quality control far exceeds what one receives with an on-site stick built home....

Nope. I went to the factory and saw it for myself!

For a decade i sold lots of manufactured homes and the privilege to visit many factories to see the different ways they were built. It was educating and interesting

Not really... they are not a factor in my market right now, so it's one less thing I've worried about learning.

There are many things I never wonder about.  How a factory built home is built is one of those.
