Endre, I think "heavy load" means that the server is overloaded, too many people on the site at once. I have been getting that message all evening and this is the first time I am able to comment. The only other thing I can think of is that the techies are working on an upgrade or tweaking the site which is causing it to run slowly.

With all the nasty weather across the country and the contests, there are probably more members on AR lately which is good but very frustrating for me. I am trying to get caught up from not having internet over the weekend but now the site is so slow that it is a challenge. Diana

Yes, this is slow this morning as well. 

And it's still slow as molasses - even without the warning.

Somedays it gets that way, seems to be working for me so far though.

I just gave up for most of the day and am about to right now, as well.

No ideas, but hoping those working on it find a solution soon!

Two developers are working on it.  The site should be back to normal soon.

I've been working on other sites.... when it's back to normal, I'll post...

From a technical perspective:

Requests coming in exceed the ability of the server(s) to process them and serve up the content back to the user.  This could be because of a variety of factors such as a backend process running on the server that is taking up a considerable amount of CPU cycles.  It could also be a denial of service attack.  Typically in high volume environments companies add additional servers to handle the load.  Amazon's EC2 for example can scale automatically.  Woot.com uses this for high shopping volume items.

From a non-technical perspective: It must be the begining of the class day in Utah.

I used my normal AR time this morning to clean my desk up some.

I finally shut off my computer for a few hours.
