Yes... we see radon mitigation systems in homes in the greater Chicago area frequently. Installation of a radon mitigation system typically assures you that the radon levels will be lower than the radon levels in the outside air.
It's a "fix", not a problem. I understand it might freak out the consumer... but once you point them to the research, they'll understand and should be okay with it.
(although I understand... I wouldn't want it in my MBR Closet, either... in our area, it's typically in the basement).

It's a good thing to have one that works - you'll never have to worry about radon! Some of our builders install them as a preventative here in Charlotte. We have very few issues with radon here - it's just a big deal to some buyers.

Yes, it was in the attic and disconnected. A further test showed no radon. It was a lucky day for the seller and even better for the buyer!

Not unusual to have radon testing and a radon system in place in Maryland. Radon can always be corrected usually for around $1000. It is good practice to test homes in our area.
No reason to pass on a home with a high level or one with a system in place.

Sometimes contractors will install equipment where it is most convenient to them, regardless of aesthetics or convenience to the customer. The listing agent should counsel the seller to have a contractor relocate the system.

Fred Griffin - radon is an issue in Oregon, mostly in the Willamette Valley which includes Portland, Salem and Eugene (the most populated cities in Oregon). In Central Oregon this is usually not an issue, however, for Portland transplants, occasionally we have a request for a radon test. In one scenario (this is the first I have ever heard) on a property we represented with a daylight basement and which was vacant and closed up for weeks, the property tested positive for radon gas. In order to make the sale happen, the seller agreed to radon remediation (cost of $5000), although subsequet tests he ran showed acceptable levels (almost nothing). It is amazing what we do to sell a home.

I think for noise, it was a bad idea (fan starting & stopping). I think the buyer needs to be educated because where there is one house, there is another that needs it. In IL, it's not a big deal but people freak when you mention it.

Of course! I have a radon mitigation system in my house. They are quite common here, and having one in place means the sellers already took care of the problem. That's a great thing!

That photo is of a manometer, which shows that there is negative pressure in the system, pulling radon from under the home to vent above the home. I've never seen one in person, as all the radon mitigation systems I've seen have been totally outdoors. I guess if the house has one installed when the home is being built, it could be anywhere. That meter is a reassuring thing, showing that the system is working. I wouldn't be frightened by it.
Recent studies are showing there may be a link between radon exposure and Alzheimer's and Parkinsons disease. I'd rather have an ugly meter in my closet than increase my risk of any of the diseases radon is associated with.

Hi Fred Griffin
In New England, we deal with Radon Mitigation all the time. As we mostly have basements they are installed there. I believe it to be a positive for a home to have it BUT most of the time home buyer refuse the inspection,

Looks like it has a low radon level (less than 1). Why was the homebuyer freaked out? (I guess it should be in the garage instead of the bedroom.)

We see a lot of radon in our area, and I suggest these tests at inspection. With the mitigation, radon levels will be lower than average approved by the government.

It really depends on what area of the country one is in. Some areas it's a radon is an issue and thus it's not 'scary' like it would be in other areas. Much like termites here in PHX area. People from back east have a tendency to 'freak' out if home had termites. The deal is - there are 2 kinds of home in PHX one that has termites and one that's going to get them. I imagine that's the case with radon.

we deal with radon mitigation systems all the time.....more than half the houses have an adverse reading....no big deal here...but why the heck would it be in a mbr closet??? we put them in the basement or in a closet that's not used very often, if the home is on a slab....we rarely have a slab home here....and above grade space would rarely have an adverse reading....the basement is the prime space for radon....

It is interesting to note that it takes a radon molecular trigger to activate or even infect a person anywhere from 5-25 years or longer to cause a cancerous outcome of some sort. Not all Radon is activated nor does one know when it does. The mere mention or suggestion does more damage than the actual radon at large. I am reminded of what a forensic doctor who does autopsies once wrote: There can be as many as ten things trying to kill someone at any given time. Which one succeeds is why we autopsy.

Off-grade house... having it in the MBR closet was unusual, to say the least.
This buyer is a family with young children... educated intelligent people, but the concept of "toxic gas" was a show-stopper.
