Because the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars. OK I just made that up. I have no idea.

Because the moon is moving westward, but it's "shadow" (and that's the key) is moving eastward.

I believe, yet cannot definitively say, that is what causes/creates the eclipse.
Self-confessed, not an orbital junkie.

Sybil, I will show my ignorance and hazard a conjecture. As the earth rotates and the moon and sun align it is the shadow that lenthens from NW to SE. Can you tell I had the bare minimum of science classes in school?

The Earth is just too slow to keep up. We rotate at about 1,000 mph while the Moon revolves around us at about 2,300 mph and circles us roughly twice each day. The Moon's orbit is tilted by 5 degrees relative to our equator which makes today's alignment such a rarity. Enjoy!

Maybe the moon is headed Northeast? When 2 worlds collide! Moon passes between sun and earth whichever direction it is headed. http://ow.ly/VXbO30evTMo

The rotation of the earth causes the appearance of the moon rising - it really does not rise - an eclipse is the appearance of the sun and moon aligning - although they are not really aligning it is the rotation of the earth and the moon that revolves around the sun that aligns to cause the eclipses
I just read that LOL

Sybil Campbell - now that is something I wish I could answer easily....

It has to do with the moon's rotation and the alignment with the sun and the earth's rotation as it casts the shadow on earth. I agree it seems backwards but it's not.

No clue... can't say I've paid much attention except to make sure to be off the road in SC where there are many people heading to Greenville.
