Paint - Gimp - and Iphoto are free and easy to use. If taking iphoto pictures - practice with the focus and light by touching the screen, using a tripod, and the white headset as the clicker...
Lightroom and photoshop are pricey and have a few extra bells and whistles.
Are you using a Nikon ? you can change the setting and not have RAW images

I use Photoshop to edit my RAW images. They can easily be converted into .jpg, .bmp, etc. from the program. I believe IrFanView (a free program you can search/download) will also convert RAW files into .jpg's.

Not a techie, real or otherwise. Have no idea what a RAW image file is and not sure I need to know if I've lived this long without knowing!

I used to shoot RAW and used Photoshop. It is not necessary for my work or daily life to use RAW ( too huge images- is #1 deal breaker for me).

Photoshop is the "100 pound gorilla" of the industry.
This 100 pound gorilla is not named "Photoshop" this is (or was) Harambe!
I like and use GIMP. It's free, open source and a very close clone of Photoshop. It can do just about everything Photoshop can do, for free, with a smaller footprint and avoiding Adobe products, which many techies (in the support and security side, like my background) strongly dislike.

That's a great question for Dick Greenberg or Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - both professional photographers compared to many of us!

When I use these images I either use the software that comes with the camera or one of my other editing programs that has a small fee.
