I'm in a incredible home with brass fixtures, looks good to me! It's also the style of what is made out of brass that makes the difference. IMO
(This is not my L.A. home)

Brass doorknobs disinfect themselves. I wrote a blog about this sometime ago. Disinfecting doorknobs
I believe real estate trends, like skirt length, cycles. I was reading an article about wallpaper coming back in vogue today.

Wait 15 to 20 years and it will come back into style. People just want a change after time. Just like the open concept craze - trust me 15 years from now they'll want those walls put back up!

I think it is a matter of taste, and not what designers have to say. There is different feel to real brass versus the faux version. A

The cycle of what is and is not in style is constantly changing. If you like brass then it's in your style. I know other styles are in trend now and brass may not be the popular trend but everyone doesn't choose chocolate over vanilla either.
I know in showing homes now buyer are starting to say everything looks the same in homes. Especially in the homes that are flipped. They all have the same look and it's quite boring.
Mix it up...it's more interesting and actually a better look.

I visited a high-end showroom a couple of months ago and brass was present and the sales rep said it is making a comeback. I think it depends on the overall look of the home, area trends, quality and desire of the buyer.

Just returned from a very high end condo and there was an exquisite collection of brass letter openers.
I did recently changed all hardware in my home because I no longer liked the look of brass.

Totally dated in my market. I see homeowners (and buyers) cringe at them and not because of designers. The colors are dated. Cool tones are in...for everything - floors, walls, tiles, kitchen/cabinet fixtures.

God, they've been outdated for so long that I can't believe you are asking this question.
EX: 2 old farts, one investor, one realtor, rehab one of my listings & they put in brass fixtures! Yikes. Then they ask me what my opinion was & I said 'welcome back to 1982'.

It's a personal choice, but at the end of the day perception is reality. So if everyone thinks they are outdated (where ever that concept came from) they are outdated if no one wants them.

I believe in style of the home and not in fashion. I've been today to a very posh house with collectible old fixtures from around the world and I'd never call that house outdated.
Yet, if your brass fixtures do not match design and style of the rest of this property, listen to your designer.

We once bought a house that had been built in 1941. For some reason, someone had painted over all the door handles and keyhole covers and we thought we should replace them. Once we took them off, we saw that they were solid brass so we painstakingly removed the paint and had some beautiful hardware.

Many designers are like the Emperor who wore no clothes.
I just laugh at them.
Went to a bunch of open houses this past weekend where the builder was a self proclaimed designer. The second most expensive home in town, yet clearly designed by an amateur.

Many of my buyers have made comments about it being outdated. Plus, the older those fixtures get, sometimes they start "peeling". They start looking very ugly.

I never liked them so I really don't care. I had brushed nickle when brass was the rage, I still have brushed nickle... it's my personal taste.
