I think an answer to this depends on the demographics of your market. I cannot think that churches hurt - unless it is a mega church which doesn't have sufficient parking and overflows into the surrounding neighborhood each Sunday morning.

I do not think they help and do not think they hurt it ether. In a bad area though, they may be more of a help over if in a all commerical area.

Only by keeping people honest and consistent via attendance. They don't pay taxes and their Real Estate is non-conforming. Stand alone product

I have no clue. But I do live in a city where we have one of the highest numbers of houses of worship per capita in the nation.

I would think that the church of Scientology and the church of Satan just might have the opposite effect.
So it also would depend on the type of church.

That is a loaded question. The answer, I believe, is .... it depends.

I think it's a benefit to many who live in the area of the church.... I own two homes in the area of St. Mary's Church and I love to hear the church bells chime at noon....

It really depends but, I have sold property that backed up to church & temple property in Charlotte and the buyers and owners in those areas love the fact that they know that no residential structures will ever be built at the backs of their property.
Walkability is key for some who use the religious facilities so, real estate values can even be higher per square foot than in similar communities.

Depends on each individual market. To some it could be very important to others, not at all.

Not necessarily and they increase the tax burden on the citizens

No. Parking is often a major issue.

Depends on the church I guess. In Los Angeles hood we have a load of them, not all of them command higher prices. ( p.s. synagogues do, since members have to walk :)

I think it could give the impression of being a safe, quiet community. I guess it depends on how well it is maintained, how busy it gets on the weekends, etc.

Most of my customers don't want to be near churches because of the traffic.

No in fact I believe they can impact an area negatively with traffic congestion & noise.

Bill,
it really depends on the neighborhood. I have seen lawsuits against churches by neighbors who found the congregation too noisy...A

Now that is something I haven't thought about. Property appraisals are based on comparisons. Since I don't mention churches when showing or evaluating properties I would say not.

I'll answer in the broader sense of the word "Church" as "A place of religious worship."
If you're too close to one, it could hurt the value from traffic. The only time I've ever seen a church boost a property's value, is an Orthodox Jewish Synagouge. It only mattered to those in the religion since they may only walk to it during the Sabbath.

BILL CHERRY I can't speak to residential real estate. In my experience, when strip centers start leasing to places of worship, they are usually on the decline. In my opinion, they do not help the value of commercial real estate.

It depends on the perspective of the client. I think churches bring in people that may frequest businesses close to the church they attend.

The churches who also choose to purchase a Starbucks franchise and allocate the proper public space could increase commercial and residential real estate.
However, in Clearwater FL, the home of the spiritual center for the Church of Scientology, they have become the blight that erases benefit to anyone or anything, land owner or business owner, other than themselves.
