I hate that. It makes the neighborhood look bad and it encourages people to drive the area looking for free stuff.
To me, a better option is to list items on Craigslist in the Free category and arrange for interested parties to pick them up.

I hate when people do this. Not to mention, it is just not right with bed bug epidemics across the U.S.

I'm all for repurposing, donating to charity and/or taking junk to the dump but, the streets of our neighborhoods are not the dump!

If it is in good shape then I am all for allowing others to make use of it.
When the students move out we end up with a few of them, save in the garage until fall then look for new students to adopt them.

Could be all of the above. In the city of Los Angeles, there is a program where the city will pick up "bulky items".

Certainly is tacky looking! In my area what's bad (and good at the same time) is that the city has a quarterly pickup of bulk trash. You can put out just about anthing on the front yard a week ahead of pickup. But it sure makes neighborhoods like trashy - andnot good for those homes that are listed.

We have a lot of that. People just leave staff outside for others to pick up and if no one wants it, they call city since it is a special truck for bulky items.

If they don't have a truck, don't want to get scammed on Craigslist, can't afford to have it hauled off etc. then they should chop it into pieces and put it in the garbage can.

When I was young, I got most of my furniture by driving around town on "large-item" day. People would sit their junk at the curb for the city to pick up and I would go shopping. ;)

Happened a lot in my college days. We would take the free stuff and also get rid of it that way. We didn't have anything to move big furniture with. Where we were there were a lot of college students. It was usually gone within the hour. -Kasey
