It's interesting, isn't it?  Most only seem note they are in place and push the button.   I believe it's probably due to a lawsuit and liability...especially here in California.

No not with smoke spray. I guess you can set the kitchen on fire to see if it 'really' works also.

Hmmm. you inspector has without thought, provided you a house warming/closing gift idea.

I have witnessed the inspector executing the battery test ONLY.

Hmmm, how do you suggest the carbon monoxide detector be tested. That one be a truly LETHAL can of spray.

I agree with Michael Jacobs - everything seems to be a liability these days but, you can purchase the spray cans yourself and test them every 6 months.

Placement and testing is all that they are required to do.  And, yes ,my inspetor does that.  If a owner wants to test it ... they can spray with smoke. Additionally, buy updated 10 year lithium battery type detectors and regularly spray with smoke. People need to be more responsible and accountable for their own safety.  I agree with Michael Jacobs - I can see someone suing because they are allergic to smoke!!!

checking that it works, with the smoke spray, is just a moment-in-time.  there's no guarantee it will still work, 30-60 days later....
