Hi Dennis - Batteries lose power as temperature drops. Your home is coolest in the middle of the night, so that's when borderline-charged batteries tip into that red zone.

Thank you for the question on smoke detector annoyance levels.
1) you are at your sleepiest & most uncoordinated
2) you've used a cheap battery & what do you expect
I'd like to add a funny story if I might making the Q&A section a learning experience that it is.
Smoke detector chirping in listing, I take it down & it is really hard to get off the wall & unplugged. Older system from 90's maybe with electrical backup. Finally get it out & throw it in the car. Calling customers & it's still chirping in my car but I can't get the battery out for nothing. Get home & get the 'Mighty Mo' screwdriver out & litterally bash that 9 volt out of that smoke detector! Get this: keeps chirping even with the battery removed for a good 30 seconds like it's possessed!

I do not know. I just know that they do. I posted years about about a long night I had because I could not get the sound to stop even after shutting down power to my house!

Because they can! I have 2 dogs, and one of them is super sensitive to that high pitched chirping. As soon as it goes off just once she starts shivering and has to leave the building. The other dog could care less. It just happened yesterday but thankfully it was at 10 pm.

Ours go out at around 11 at night just as we are trying to go to sleep. If we fix it then the next night or two another follows.

Why would anyone be offended? Then again some get offended when the wind blows out of the west. It is one of those things that fate brings to keep us on our toes

I had one that was hard-wired and should not have gone out but it chirped away day and night when it felt like it. I actually called the MFG and got the inventor who said it was a defect and he walked me through the remedy

I know some people who are so annoyed with that "peep peep" sound that they disable the smoke detectors.

They have a program for a practice drill to get out of the house while you are sleeping.

And now, the new smoke detectors have no-replaceable batteries to add insult to injury!

Oh, I never knew what Dick Greenberg mentioned! I always thought you were supposed to store your batteries in the REFRIGERATOR!!!
I haven't had one go out on me for years - since I started changing out the batteries every 6 months. (knocking on wood!)

It could be that the air in the home is not being "stirred" buy people moving around, and the methane gas rising to the upper layer of air may be stressing the battery.

I have them wired to the house. But the back up will go out every 10-15 years.
