Dogs and cats need to be out of sight and out of mind.   Cage, leash, chain, car trunk, anywhere but inside the house.  And those dog dishes, cat litter boxes, etc. should also be put away.

The pet should be neither seen nor heard, really. 50% of the people are pet people and 50% aren't. No point in taking a risk. Take the pups for a walk or relegate the kitty to an out-of-the-way place.

No matter how adorable, I would much prefer to have pets in a crate or taken away for Showings Karen Jones Lewis, MBA, Realtor.  Now that being said, I have had older folks have their pets out, too.  I'm always very cautious so that they don't 'run out that front door', and fortunately there haven't been any that I could not control (barking-wise).

If possible pets should be removed from the home, not just put in the garage or in a portable kennel in the basement. I do not let buyers bring pets into a home on showings , I explain to them that the sellers may have pet allergies.

I'm an animal lover, but even a crated dog is distracting.  I'm not fond of having to pay attention to make sure the cat doesn't run outside either. These things all distract from what should be front of mind, the house itself. -Kasey

Depends on the pet, but in general, it is better to lock a pet(pets) in one of the room, some people have terrible allergy. On my open houses, if a cat or pet have to stay home, I close that door and stick a note on a door why the door should be closed.

Pets should be away when buyers a checking out the home. Sometimes people will leave shy cats, but dogs should always be away. I have heard horror stories of agents attacked by "friendly" dogs when their territory (home) is invaded by strangers.

I second the motion that pets should be invisible or gone.  Many people are allergic to pet hair and dander.  I also know people who are afraid of various animals.  What if your sellers' pet is a 7 foot long snake?  How many buyers will be so creeped out that they can't muster up any warm feelings for the house?  Why jeopardise the showing, and possibly, the sale by letting the buyers meet the pets?

Never a good idea to have the pets tour with the buyers. Too much distraction & I have found there are too many types that are afraid of dogs, even cats.

Yes, fluffy must be taken away or put in a safe corner somewhere.

Best to have dogs out of the house, some people are afraid of them. Cats don't like to leave, but should be in a separate room with a warning not to let the cat out. I had a cat bite a little girl during a showing; she was bleeding (she did pet the cat, the cat did not attack her).

I am a hard core animal lover, so for the sake of the pets, I firmly tell sellers the pets must be removed from the premises, if possible, or very well secured during showings.  I absolutely do not want pets to get outside or left out by accident.

From a human perspective, it can be a turn off for buyers to deal with animals.

I don't want that pit-bull or Rottweiler locked in one of the bedrooms if that is what put away means. Take those big fellows for an ice cream. Have one listing with two great saints and you could saddle those size dogs up... they make huge moon pies to watch out for touring the back field of the 10 acres around the home.

Pets should be GONE or invisible.

In cases where that does not work well, Sasquatch will apply the leash and provide the 'full service' most agent can only dream of.

Under no circumstances are pets allowed free range. Not because that pet is a problem, but because we just don't know what will walk through the door, like a buyers agent who allow their client to bring an untrained critter. Of course it is a alleged 'service' pet achieved by a Drs letter NOT by special training of the critter.
