Unless it is strictly enforced, it won't deter many...face it, people who text while driving are being self-centered and irresponsible.  No law to fix that, unfortunately. 

As with all risky behavior that the youth engage in, they think that the warning is for someone else since it will never happen to them.

Jeff Pearl It appears they aren't going to cite anyone for texting unless unless the driver is posing a danger to other drivers. An accident waiting to happen.

That last sentence sounds very subjective.  Basically they saying "Go ahead and text".  Don't like the message being sent in Co.

I'm not sure anything can keep folks from texting these days.

my blood boils when I see someone texting... I'm like a raving lunatic when I see it.... road rage sets in...ugh

I do not believe anything will stop those who are inclined to text and drive unless it is forced ... in other words, texting features are automatically shut down when in a car.  There is not yet an app for that.

1. This wont happen to me and do it

2. Will do it until they don't

Each one comes to their reality either by force or choice but they come

Not sure how well our no texting while driving law is working here in CA. The penalty is lower. You get a bigger fine if you get caught driving in the carpool lane alone unless in an approved car

We have laws in CA about that.  I still see lots of people holding their phones, or focusing on the phone where it is mounted.  I see them texting, putting on their make-up, reading the paper...I  have not faith in these laws.  A

Texting while driving should never be allowed. Some should not talk and drive. You have to be on a wireless system in Illinois and while I might disagree, it is a step in the right direction!

Cell phones have turned otherwise intelligent law abiding citizens into idiots, laws or not. 

Our news reports occasionally finding dead drivers in wrecks with their phone still in mid-text or a laptop going. I just keep thinking "was that text worth your life?"

Look around at the next intersection with a traffic light and tell me what you see? Laws aren't curtailing the activity by one iota Jeff.

Here in NH you can not hold a phone in your hand for any reasomn while driving including no texting, no talking, no gps and no social media. Hands free or get a ticket and that includes at red lights too. 

It should help. Ours in Oklahoma is a $100 fine and not being enforced.

Jeff, I did a post on this bill this morning, and you can text while at a red light, or stopped in traffic.   If you are found texting while driving and deemed driving carelessly, you will get a ticket.

Our state is pushing it.

Tough to enforce. I'm hoping someone creates an accurate hands-free device. The ones available now are still spotty.

It is illegal to text during driving in CA, but drivers still do:( I think, the fee is too low.

They are not going to enforce NO TEXTING.  Too much work.  Last year we lost 2 beautiful people in Denton. Mother and her daughter due to another driver texting.  Both families lost 2 members.  I'm guilty of looking at my phone while sitting at a red light - not driving. 

  That last sentence negates the rest of the bill.

Texting is dangerous when driving or behind the wheel. It is a distraction like talking on the phone.

Minnesota is hot on this.  The way this reads is nothing to worry about until you kill someone.

That's ridiculous! The last sentence makes a joke of the entire bill... sounds like you can text as long as you're driving in a straight line and keeping up with the speed?

Only active enforcement will stop it.  We've had anti-texting laws for years now in Cali, hasn't stopped anything.

I doubt it without strict enforcement. Let's face it, many people believe that the rules/laws are for others and not for them. I've always hated that entitlement feeling.

I highly doubt it will do much help on stoping people from texting and driving. We about got into a wreck in Colorado Springs on Sunday driving home. The lady was to busy looking at her phone to see that she was all over the road and almost sideswipped our truck!
