It's part-time only if working 60-70 hours/week is now considered part-time!

I would say it would be difficult to do this on a part time basis.

I consider my RE business to be full time but I work part time hours. Isn't that the reason we chose to become self-employed? Work smart not hard!!

I work full time as an engineer AND full time as an agent and have for quite a few years. A lot of my "vacation" days from engineering go to real estate work (buyer showings, walkthroughs, etc.). Sometimes the real estate hours are a bit lighter, sometimes very heavy and free time in my life becomes very scarce. I prioritize to get things done. Navy training comes in handy even decades later :) Bill

The problem with part time is it takes too much time a way from other things!

CLARIFICATION: What I mean is, do you work other jobs to make ends meet or are you working only in real estate?

The reality is none of us would agree on the definition of part time.
Some would say part-time means you have other income.
Some would say other income is more than real estate income.
Others would say one transaction a year, with a 100K pay day is part time but adds up to more than 80% of most agents annual income.
A few would say a real estate agent with a 'stand-up routine at the Comedy Club" is not taking real estate seriously therefore not 100% committed.
Those who answered this question without asking a few questions.......?

I know of agents who work part time at some other gig, while getting their real estate off the ground. That actually might be a good thing for them because they are out there meeting people. But if they work full time at something else, I don't see how they can effectively do real estate. And, I think, there are LOTS of licensed agents in just that situation. Ideally, an agent has another income which doesn't need specific hours.

I work full time enough for two and a half full time jobs. Part timers usually have another job and that isn't always ideal for their clients.

One of us is full time and the other is part time. I'm comfortable speaking for my husband when I say neither of us could do it without the other.

Nathan Gesner one needs to be a SUPERMAN to work part time in Real Estate and still do justice to the job - or just do few transactions a year!
And for me, neither I am Superman or nor do I do just few transactions.

Full time and beyond. Just talked someone out of doing this part-time. They thought it was an easy way to make big side money Ha! Only if you aren't willing to ever spend time with your kids or doing anything but work.

Full-time; I know some people are very successful doing real estate part-time along with another job, but I dont' think there's enough time in the day for more than one career.

It is hard to define part time versus full time. Is it the hours in the office and with clients or do you include the amount of time spent on the computer?

Nathan,
Definitely Full-time, I can not imagine being successful doing it part-time. No gigs here:)

Nothing part time about it for me. Technically I can say I work two full time jobs in real estate ... two 8 hour shifts a day
I would not have it any other way.

Full time for many years now.
It was part time in the beginning, because I made way better money as a DJ back in the 1990's and early 2000's. But, when I moved to San Diego in 2003, I switched gears and DJ'd on the side and went initially to 60-70 hours real estate weeks. I'm retired from the DJ world these days and I put in 50-60 hour weeks now.

I'm able to do it effectively part time. I have the needed flexibility, and I do VERY well! (Not necessarily broker derived, in mainly medical related real estate).
