Yikes. I haven't noticed. How did you discover that they contained worms that allowed the sender to read the emails and discover when buyers were due to wire funds?

I see them multiple times a day... it's never-ending. Don't know what my clients are seeing as no one has ever reported the issue to me.

It is a continual battle to keep the less sharp folks from opening such links and exposing all of us to the liability that it generates.

When an unexplained email like that comes out of the blue, I hit the "forward" button creating a draft. There it will show you the real email it's coming from.

There are several scams that keep going around about looking for a high priced listing and the buyer is paying cash.

I had a couple of scammers call about three months ago. I was surprised at how bold they were. They even so bold as to involve my attorney and try to pass a phony check off on him Lynnea Miller .

Sure, in fact we got hit by one right here in Activerain by a company. Fortunately, I saw it coming and reduced our exposure. Steer clear of Jeremy Marquez working under the bogus company name of
My Biz i$ Your Biz
This guy uses established agent names to induce others to sign-up for his non-existent services. I have had several out of state agents calling me asking about him

Scams are getting trickier and trickier. Hover over the link and see if it is different than what is typed. That's one sure way of not opening a Phishing email

Yes! Actually had a horrible thing happen last week...
A scammer sent wiring instructions from, what looked to be, the buyers' attorney's email account, to the buyer. The buyer just HAPPENED to arrive at Closing and proclaimed, "I should have confirmation from my bank that the funds have hit your Wells Fargo account very shortly!"
The attorney doesn't have a WF account - so, they IMMEDIATELY got on the phone; the Feds were able to intercept the wire, thankfully. Had the buyer waited just a few more minutes or not said anything at all about the wire (most people don't say anything other than, "the wire has been sent"), he would have lost nearly $100K...and of course, who knows if the house would have Closed!
One thing that they warned us of...
Using my email address as an example: My real email address is CharlotteBroker@icloud.com. The scammers may use Charlotte.Broker@icloud.com - just a simple period (.) is what they had used. The buyer thought the email was actually from the attorney - he didn't look closely enough at the return email address. Supposedly this is happening with real estate agents' emails also.
We just can't be safe enough these days!

Yeah, always check the sender's email is my policy. Most of those scams come from overseas so most likely it's the entire county at once for any given scam.

I receive many emails stating I have closing statements, and are all scams.

Lynnea - I haven't noticed an increase, but I know there are a lot of people looking to scam others in the real estate industry.
