It depends on what you mean by real estate "industry." Different sources for different aspects.

Not Inman.
Not NAR.
Not Zillow.
I have several Twitter Lists, including Real Estate and Mortgage and Title
Plus skim-reading the financial papers, and about a dozen real estate websites.

I think most knowledge of news and trends comes from doing not just reading. Most news sources only report trends after they happen. A bpo agent can see market trends go up or down as it happens. Loan officers, under wrtters can relay mortgage trends, issues or tips. Inman , Nar, Zillow and others at times, seem to be more promotional promoting a service that they state is a trend but a glorified commercial.

We read our little free local paper for local real estate information and especially any rules going before the city that may affect property values, etc. We like to read our local realtor board postings, blogs, etc and their market reports, the international division and the realtor party information for our local board and the Miami board. I also keep up with NAHREP and AREAA notices and blogs, etc.

"..about the real estate industry.."
In my interpretation, that means social trends and predictive analytics.
Fortune, WSJ and Architectural Digest.
However, within the identified industry, critial reading is esesntial.
Example from the methodology section a report from the darkside: "Anyone identified via digital fingerprinting, speeders, and those who failed a given number of quality control checks within the survey were not counted as completes." Within this sentence are clues regarding associations determined by digital chips enabling a 'smart' method of determining intent. This statement is more relevant about the real estate industry than the content of the report.
What will I do? Go to my DOD associates and find out what the darkside is doing, why this may be beneficial, determine how I can leverage their efforts and keep paying attention.
What you get from the real estate industry are rewarmed, regurgitated pablum that keeps agents doing what they have always been doing.

It does depend on what I'm looking for but I read a variety of sources: NAR, Texas Realtor, MLS, Active Rain, Inman News, Texas A& M Research and I follow several local economists, local lenders and make sure I attend any relevant seminars offered on Real Estate in Texas..I'm interested in keeping up locally since real estate varies across the nation.
