I name the images describing what they are for the viewers who unable to see and are using an audio reader to navigate the site. The search engines can recognize images so if you name them for seo and not what they are, you can expect the search engines to treat you like the spammer you are.

I typically do title them for SEO and yes, alt-name them as well. I don't always search in images for mine when checking SEO but, often seem them when I'm not!

Funny or not so funny story is i never knew it mattered until reading an Active rain post a couple of years back. Now i label all my pictures and even need to go back to some old ones and name them too, 

I get the photos from the agents and they're ready to go!!! I don't edit... but I should tag!!!! ugh

Alt tags are so important... but just about everyone ignores them.

I name them ADDRESS - SEQUENCE # - ROOM   For example on my new listing:  2560 Rikkard - 01 - FRONT   or  2560 Rikkard - 20 - Pool

My SEO tool will take the name and make it the alt tag.

 My Photos usually rank much higher than I do. .

Andrew Mooers - very good point. I usually name them according to the actual name - before I upload to ActiveRain. Definitely helps.

I worked on an SEO team full-time for years and we noticed this to be a small factor, but still a best practice to be doing. When you check the search results for any given term, if photos are shown, then it's worth doing image SEO optimization for! 

I name them and compress them. I use a variety of programs.

I do watch how I label my photos, but I haven't checked to see how they rank. That's a good idea. How do you do that?

Absolutely, especially over the last couple of years (although I don't always go back and check to see how they rank until months later). It is on my "to-do list" to go back and label older photos. I do most of my photo work in Photoshop and/or Canva. Assigning alt tags, author, ratings, descriptions, etc. I typically perform directly via Windows Explorer before posting the photo.

Yes we use alt tags on just about every photo or image and have been doing so for some time now. I didn't realize the importance until I started using yoast but quickly learned the value of being consistent.

I do not do anything until I post the pic & don't use any specific software other than picasa which is now defunct.
