Okay here's an expert at bioswale - goal being to capture as much rain and have it soak and save in your plot.  First you don't want this up against the foundation of your structure as can cause mildew and rot.  This is not a swamp. The slope and drainage of soil type are considered in planning. Here in California with drought we ought to have more of this idea, even permeable driveways. I built a hugelkultur bed next to rain garden on a ranch to save the runoff roof gutters are directed to storage and the rain garden the hugelkulture raised bed uses less water for my vegetables. I will take some photographs for you Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers  could be useful in Arizona where you also have water shortages.  Much better than rolling out astroturf

A great use of rain water. If only our cities were as smart to capture rain water and preserve it.

In California, if you have a garden dependent on the rain, it is a dead garden.
