I think you're right.... materials that are solid surface but not granite.

It depends on the texture and tone of the granite. Up here, leathered and satin are both still quite popular as is one that looks like soapstone but is more durable.

I am appalled at how wasteful some of these trends, fads and whims can be. I suspect that hgtv has something to do with this.

Granite is dated.... That is correct. Our generation also. Porous...

i don't know, I think it depends on what their parents had - I know my younger customers all say "Oh, cool my parents had that" - not even know whether it was granite, corian or formica

I am not seeing that trend in my area.

I've not noticed any gravitation away from granite. Still seems to be a popular choice. When it comes to the Millenials I seem them looking for the "ready to move in" house with nice countertops and stainless appliances.

I our market the trend is toward more modern solid surfaces. We are seeing granite composites, glass composites, as well as granite. The more flowing granite is not as popular as it was in the past and we are seeing more monotone variations.

I haven't noticed any waning of popularity in the Iowa City area. It's still offered as standard in new construction and buyers expect it, even in the less expensive homes.

I still have buyers who expect granite. I don't like it, but I'm not buying or selling. I am waiting for the latest trends to catch up here, then I will watch sellers with such surprise in their faces, what do you mean they don't want granite?

I think that younger buyers may like quartz or even limestone, but marble is much too hard to maintain. In WIlliamsburg, Virginia the market for granite is still good as the perceived value is strong.

Light colored granite and quartz here...and wood/concrete in more contemporary/modern homes!
1,078,201
I haven't heard anyone balk at granite, however I've seen alternatives being marketed more and included in newer upgrades.

Granite is preferable to tile. Quartz beats granite and marble beats quartz. Low maintenance beats high maintenance. I see it across the age spectrum, not just with younger buyers.
I wouldn't discount a house for having granite though.

It depends on the buyer -- not necessarily the age. I do agree that granite is losing favor for many.

Depends - younger to me is going to be different than younger to you ;) I'm an old fart

It is a mix here, yet no one has said i wont buy that house because it has granite

I am starting to see more silestone and quartz. I really like it- a nice shift from granite. Granite still is more favorable than Corian and laminate.

Granite was pushed out about 10 years ago by quartz and now marble is pushing it out.

There are a lot of new options on the market, I was showing today a kitchen with granite counter-tops, backslash and floor tiles.... buyers said they would replace all that if they buy.
4,319,773
Amy Kramer - not as much in my area. Buyers still love Granite or Corian counter tops.
3,167,714
I find young people still love it, but experienced clients ... who have owned multiple homes, not so much anymore.
3,986,308
It has been not as popular since it has been reported that bacteria find more places to hide than in man made products
3,988,013
I think quartz is more popular thatn it was but not all young buyers can afford it so they are happy just getting granite.
3,742,070
I'm finding older buyers gravitating toward quartz, too! Still, granite trumps Formica!

I don't think so. Just a personal choice and lots of options! Countertops are very personal since you look at them constantly and touch them everyday!
1,712,776
Still going strong especially with the price drops. Quartz done right is more expensive but very modern and clean.

You are right, Amy! I hear it on a regular basis here in Charlotte. They want 'different,' "since everyone has granite" so, they look to quartz or concrete.
I have a seller who recently replaced countertops with granite...I met the buyer at the house last week - to measure countertops as this nice young couple is changing the almost new granite to quartz!
2,684,669
I think that the trends are set by builders in subdivision model homes. They want something different (or something that costs less), so they install that new product or material in their model home. Then they put out the word that "granite is so two thousand ten", or "stainless steel is your parent's kitchen".

Agree but I don't think that it would constitute a negative. Just like harvest gold appliances, ignore them.
1,728,256
We are seeing younger home buyers more willing to compromise on issues like this. Formica is definitely out!
2,817,727
NO! The majority of home owners prefer granite! I'm here in NYC area.
But, quartz is growing, esp white and grays and very high end buyers prefer the more expensive calcutta gold. Honed granite is growing, too.
But, granite is still favored by the majority and by far. It will never go out of style as it's natural (and that's also why calcutta gold is popular).

It's a mixed bag. Some still like and want it while others are interested in other solid surface materials!

Most buyers don't know the difference between granite and quartz. i think both have their fans.

Granite still seems to be the choice in my market in all age groups. People do like quartz in bathrooms, however.
