I'm no designer but I'd go with consistency and change out the spindles for wrought iron. But if budget is an issue, find a different chandelier

Personally, I love the look of the wrought iron, and it would tie into the chandelier nicely.

Sounds like my entry way exactly
I would just leave the rails myself
However, mine leads to a landing not a great room - if it were me and I had a great room stair case, I would strip the paint and have the rail and spindles oak stained/varnished

Sharon,
I would have to see the whole place, before saying anything. It depends. A pciture would have helped. A

It likely will depend on personal preference and budget.

Sharon Altier, SFR - consistency is the key - all of the same is what I like. (Though I have heard some people love contrast!)
However, I do not have the best taste when it comes to designing....

hmmm..that doesn't seem to match when I visualize it but maybe it really looks much better in the real. What a unique mix. I think with Oak Rails and white spindels, maybe Oak Chandelier or Elk Horn type of Chandelier would be better. Or...the other way around..wrought iron rails to match wrought iron chandelier...Let us know how this turns!

Sounds like a high end home? I would remove the paint from the spindles and go natural oak all the way up

No official training in design, but I think it should be consistant. It would be a more finished look.

I would really have to see the room, but I'm thinking changing the spindles to iron would be a very nice touch.

Sharon, my first thought is to do something with the stairs. A 22ft chanelier isn't that hard to change out, just need some scafolding, a ladder and a handyman who isn't afraid of heights. My investor's crew just did that in under 30 minutes.
Ideally, I'd recommend getting a good stager/designer in there to get the vibe of the house and make recommendations. Hard to judge based on words alone.

I would say it all depends what sells more in the area. I would look for similar homes sold comps and try to determine the better option.

Go with the wrought iron for the spindles. I have also seen the handrail painted black and it looked fantastic and and very contemporary and blended great with dark wrought iron.

Needing a colorful sketch as it is hard to visualize the stairway in relation to flooring etc.

To really be able to picture it we need pictures. I think that everything should flow and match. One or the other

Without a phot, I'm not sure, but the Wrought Iron sounds like it would work the best.

Do you have a photo?
And, what price range house, and how much is their budget?

If they don't have oak flooring, maybe refinishing the wood to an espresso color to compliment the wrought iron light fixture.

You didn't mention the price range. Upper end I would tell them yes. Lower end - no.

I am kind of a "waste not, want not" type of person, so I would leave it as it is.

Not sure. i would have to look at some photos. Check on Houzz for ideas.
