batter boards are used when pouring foundations to make sure the corners are square when the forms are set....  

in architecture it's basically a slope.... if I remember correctly.... had my builder's license for 20 years but let it expire 8 years ago..

this is a tough question for most!!

A wall sloping in the opposite direction is said to overhang.[2] The term is used with buildings and non-building structures to identify when a wall is intentionally built with an inward slope. A battered corner is an architectural feature using batters. A batter is sometimes used in foundationsretaining walls,dry stone walls, damslighthouses, and fortifications.
