I don't ever give knives to anyone as a gift, client or otherwise. It is bad luck. I give very few closing gifts in general. I mean, does my doctor give me a closing gift after surgery; how about my accountant or my attorney?

If you ever work with German customers, giving a knife is considered "cutting" the friendship.  There is a workaround, just ask them to "pay" you as little as a penny in return so it's a "sale" not a gift.  In a case like that, I would err on the safe side.

I never did do the Cutco thing for clients. My brother is a blueberry farmer and I loved giving 2 blueberry bushes as gifts for new homeowners.  It's a gift that keeps on giving.

I did not know giving a knife is supposed to be bad luck.  And... I do love giving this gift to newlyweds:  Knife set (with block), cutting board, and a Knife Skills book.   I know, all kinds of smarty pants remarks can be made about that but I wish I'd had a good set of knives when I set up housekeeping.  LOL

Branded Gifts are not gifts, IMHO. They are marketing pieces. I've never used or given Cutco knives.

Lisa,

I agree with Nina Hollander .  Silvia Dukes PA, REALTOR, CRS, CIPS, SRES is right about the European market, and I was thought that it was bad luck also, or give a penny.

I don't.

I believe when giving cutlery you need to include a coin(even a penny).

My name is included on the card unless I'm giving anonymously.

I never used CutCo. If you give a knife, tradition is you give it with a penny, the recipient gives it back as payment, thereby preserving the relationship & their fingers.

I do not give branded items, I typically give a celebratory dinner or something specific to that client's interests or needs. I stay in touch with my clients, so I do not need to brand my gifts.

Many agents do not do gifts, and I love that they are my "competition". I enjoy it when a client says "my last Realtor didn't buy me a thank you gift?"

No, but I have used branded items but not as closing gifts.  One size does not always fit. I prefer to match the gift & the client.

I used to give a home warranty, and then I switched to a seafood pie (they are delicious), but I needed a system to help me keep in touch after the gift... so I created a closing gift software that doubles as a past client follow up automation system.

I don't give gifts in general.  If I do, it's some food I made, most likely, or a gift card.

I don't see knives as a bad "ju-ju" gift, simply because I like knives and they tend to be a common theme at holiday gift exchanges (aka the annual knife and flashlight exchange).

I have seen the Cutco display at trade shows, but would probably not give that as a closing gift. It just doesn't seem appropriate, even though they are customized.

I have heard the buyers return these bad luck weapon grade gifts...

So and so was stabbed the weapon used has engraving "Sam the realtor" name on it in the local paper.... Is that something the realtor had in mind?
