I got into real estate when my marriage was ending and my husband refused to help send our son to college.   Like Susan Laxson I realized that education was not going to support me and four years of college for Lance.   The rest, as they say, is history.  Lance graduated from Virginia Tech as a Theater major in 2002. Today he works as a lighting designer for CNN in New York.  And I discovered  that I love helping people buy and sell homes  : )

Real Estate was a career move for me, I knew my DJ career was in later half of it's natural span, so I preparing for my 40's basically. But, ironically in part, the extra hours and running two careers in parallel, ended my first marriage. There were other deeper factors too, but it sort of lit the fuse to a "relationship-bomb" we'd built over the course of 5 years.

I got into real estate after I lost an incredible job.  It was a political post, and my guy lost an election.  In DC, I think a lot of us get into real estate after a change in administrations.

Although I'm retired, I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals. - Wenatchee, WA
Retired Agent / Broker / Prop. Mgr, Wenatchee, WA

Love lost actually took me out of real estate. Like you, my husband died after a long illness.  I was broken hearted and tired! I didn't want to do anything.  I told myself I was taking a year off because I deserved. It was 3 years before I could even stand to be home without him.  I did a lot of traveling, visiting family and friends to fill the void.  After the 4th year, I decided to go into the training aspect because of the woeful results many agents experience.  I had done training before and love that aspect, and couldn't imagine going back into the daily grind.  So, here I am, plugging along but not pushing.... trying to contribute in some small way and enjoy the flexibility of life.

The lesson learned?  No matter how hard it is, you will never regret a single day taking care of someone you love unconditionally and being loved by them in the same way.

Annette, what a profound and moving lesson you have shared with us. Thank you and I am sorry for your loss.

I came into real estate when I learned that I would never make enough money to help support my family by teaching elementary school. My first commission check was more than I made an entire year of teaching.

Anyhoo, I didn't get into RE via a loss. BUT I got into publishing, metaphysical counseling and teaching (longtime passions) via a series of HUGE losses. Nothing could possibly be as hard as going on without half of your soul, though.
