Let's say Z goes out of business tomorrow. The model is already out there, and replicated (though not with the same marketshare). Someone else would fill the gap with the same technology/platform under a different name, so I don't think it really matters.
Until agents don't throw cash at that kind of platform, there will be a market for them or someone else running the same type of operation.
Plus, if Zillow went away, how in the world would anyone know what their home is truly worth?

They won't die quickly even being 2 bil lighter. The only way they'll be finished is when all local MLS's change their rules and either stop sending listing data all together or only send "limited" listing data to them for syndication. It would also help if agents stop sending them an outrageous amount of money every month for "impressions". Seriously, looking into different lead generation programs, I have not heard one authentic raving review about Z yet. The ones that do rave about it sound like paid advertisements.

Don't worry Fred, if they die, another parasite will come along to adopt their business model and employees. They will be back to the same game under a new name, lightening the load on agents wallets in every market.

Fred,
Time will tell, and if Move wins, Zillow will no doubt appeal, and then it will be tied up in court, ad nauseum. A

Not yet. It is seeking 1.7B in damages from Z not settled yet. But Move is not an angel. It is local. The founder was charged with inside trading and is behind bars for 3 yrs.
Z is stepping up its Premiere agent ads sending me endless eMails since I blocked their phone. If I get a call I will say you mean you pay me $400 month compensation signing up for each zip code? They will hang up.

Somehow in an appeal they will slide. Z or their model is not leaving town. Things will never be the same.

It's almost as if Zillow and Trulia are real entities. They do a terrible job providing information to the public, and most people don't even know how off they are.

Between that and the other lawsuit over illegal working conditions (no breaks, forced unpaid OT and a host of other CA labor law violations), I wouldn't be surprised if they go under.

Spencer Rascoff is a smug CEO. Rascoff says childish things to challenge Murdoch. By the end of this year Z will spend 60 million in legal fees. Z is sued by sales employees who hound lenders and Realtors to buy those crummy leads for zip codes. Next lawsuit Z will face is for sexual harrassment - atmosphere there treats women worribly.
Will Z survive? Yes. They will buy MLS from brands if they have to. They will morpf to mine more data and the public will click on Z.
Move (Murdoch owns Realtor.com) must focus on adding faster search, live chat, mining data, selling data, advertising and making websites better for mobile and phone search. Move needs to hire young talent who can write code, come up with new marketing systems, hire gaming talent and realtors who are old school to find new combinations of methods for 2020 Real Estate sales

I do not think the consumer will be harmed - they will go elsewhere like R.com.
Oh well, that is the way of business. If you play mean with the other kids in the sand box - expect a black eye or 2.
There are some amoung us (??) who defend these guys in secret to their last breath because they've worked the system. I applaud them I guess. On FB in a couple of groups these would be fightin' words!

I do wish enterprises whose existence is based on deception, misrepresentation, stolen IP, and predation be relegated to the ash-heap of history.
However, the consumer will be harmed if the plaintiff prevails.
Z-devil does provide needed alternatives to the consumer and those who chose not the join the REALTOR club.
Z-devil, I hope, will be compelled to repent of their wicked ways in order to continue. I do not wish Z-devil to disappear completely.
Every agent who has not paid a dime to Z-devil should be eligible for reparations also. Now that would be a good thing. Those playing patty-cake with Z-devil should get NOTHING.
Of course you do know the basis of this suit is based on Z-devils success in hiring the top three executives from Realtor.com several years ago.
