Working for a community bank, not one of the big banks. The personal touch we give our clients makes a big difference for the staff, like me, and for the clients. I worked 22 years for one of the big banks. I prefer where I am now and the close relationships I have with my colleagues.

I've been with both. As David Barr said, it is a matter of finding the right broker and support services. That probably changes throughout a career.

I own a boutique. Used to work for a large company. Much prefer to be in direct control of the clientele that we accept. It is physically impossible to walk into my office. Unless you are the dog. :)

I work for a biggie.... RE/MAX.... but I've worked for a "mom and pop" and that was by far my favorite....and we were always #1 in our entire MLS database.... I hate to be redundant, but an office is as good as the agents who work there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did the Big company when I started. We started our own in 2010 and are now the second largest Independent brokerage in Elkhart County. We have over 50 different brokerages in the county and many of them are independent.

Anthony,
Expert broker associate and stager Kim Gaston and I make up a two person boutique brokerage. Our clients rave about the job we do, that their former agent with a big company didn’t do.

Boutique which is mine and does investment real estate. The middle ground does not have the economy of scale to really work profitably.

I too have worked for big companies like Century 21 and small boutique style as well like Koenig and Strey but now work for myself and I am not sure working from a home office would necessarily qualify as a boutique office.

Anthony,
It depends on the marketplace. Some cities and towns can support both, and others cannot. There are two dominant players in Santa Barbara. A local company and a big company, and the big company is dominating now. They just have better services for agents. A

I started with KW nine years ago. Then I went to a local company that went from a small brokerage to 600 agents because of their great commission splits. However, the advertising rules changed last year in Tennessee surrounding agent branding. Big brokerages were feeling the pinch because agents/teams are more interested in branding themselves, than their brokerage. Big brokerages here felt it was confusing to consumers. Teams/agents now are NOT allowed to use realty, real estate, real estate group, realty group, realty company, etc in their agent/team branding. If they are with a big brokerage, they must signify that they are a team or an individual agent. The brokerage name and number MUST be prominent in all advertising. As a result, many agents are opening independent brokerages, including myself. Right now, it's just my husband and I but we love it. I didn't realize how much I'd enjoy being under my own banner. It's great and business has actually increased. It doesn't hurt that I chose an SEO-friendly brokerage name and have internet dominance in my market.
