     "Limey" is a nickname for British sailors... because lime juice or lemon juice was added to their daily ration of grog.  The vitamin C in the limes helped prevent scurvy.

Yes, that makes sense.  Rose's lime juice was patented in 1867 to help.  (They discovered the issue in 1753...but didn't make it standard practice to have lime or lemon rations until around 40 yrs later. They used to preserve w/ rum.
