yes I do. I know how to do the research for comps and if they want me to handle it, I take care of them. Often I will co-list with a local broker, however.

If I feel like I can get the job done then why not? The seller wants to sell and if he trusts me then it should be a good partnership.

I'd gratefully accept an out of area listing.
I had a client who wanted me to represent her in the purchase of a property a few hundred miles from my area. I told her I'd refer her to a local agent, but she said she wanted me to handle it.
I found a local agent to teach me what was customary for the area and to provide contacts for inspections, etc. We agreed on a dollar amount for her assistance and off we went.
My client knew I'd never visit the property and she was fine with it. It all worked out well.

I had someone from out of my area that wanted to list with me. I found them a good agent to work with in their market.

on occasion, we DO go out of our area for a special atty who refers business to us.... I can market anything from anywhere.... that's not an issue....I want the listing agent to be well-versed on the town and the area of the town.....

It depends. Extra time involved, listing price, my MLS or another, am I familiar with local customs in that area. A lot to think about before committing.

Debbie Reynolds when they are referred - or know me personally, I'd take the listing if I can (and they'll insist on the same, too.)
Though I had referred one out in NY - and stayed in close contact with the listing agent throughout the process.

Debbie Reynolds I would refer them. I think it is a disservice, if you don't know the market in an area.

I sell out of my "normal" market as searches often evolve over time - ie, start in my primary market and then move out from there. When the time comes to sell, I am grateful to be invited back in, but just lost one because they chose a more local agent to sell the home ;-(

All great answers here, but in the end if the client wants my expertise in marketing and negotiation, if I could handle it at my 125% I have for myself, then absolutely. If not, then I would co-list or refer to a more local agent, explaining to my client why its in their best interests. That is always first and foremost for me.

Good morning Debbie. Not a simple answer. I would think it depends on your relationship with the seller and it depends if the property is going to sell quickly.

yes and no.
we work for a few banks where we would risk future business if we did not take an assignment on a fringe area so we take it. But from a regular seller I refer them out to someone who would be a better fit.

I'll go sell anywhere in the state. Problem is, when you call for info on a property, they want the referral. My solution? I joined ALL of the local MLS's. I've sold an hour away, have listings an hour and a half away, it's all good! Why would I give away a paycheck if I'm doing right by my clients?

I make sure it's in my market area or I definitely refer them out.
Great question ....
763,883
Yes, as long as I have access to the MLS. Let's face it, the MLS is the main tool for selling a home.
4,800,082
I will if the seller is aware that others may be able to do a better job, but still wants to use me.

I refer out; don't feel I could do justice to seller if too far away. Don't feel like driving, either. I already cover a large area, quite a number of towns that can be up to 50 minutes away, so "out of area" means some distance.
