Live trap...Put some food in it and then when you catch them, if you plan on letting them go, take them miles away.

You also need to block the entrance at some point, but I am thinking you need to catch a couple first so they don't try and chew a new exit hole.

If that does not work, Barbara has the right idea...just keep the kiddies away!

Never dealt with this but I would think we'd call a critter person to take care of it for us.

I have never had this issue.   However, in my area, there are a number of companies that one can call to resolve the issue.

You call your favorite exterminator to remove the animals and then you screen or block the entry locations.

Call animal control or visit the nearest Farm & Tractor store and get a few live capture traps and bait them well.

Seal the entry and exits.

Check every four hours, or every time you hear the clank.

The small caliber is tempting until the fist ricochet occurs. The the shooter becomes the hunted.

Come on dude - - are you nuts? :-)

Actually, it depends on how smart your squirrels are. One effective way if to scatter a box of mothballs through the insulation in the attic. While that usually works I have seen instances where the squirrels actually pick them up one by one and toss them out. Good Luck.

Jack Lewitz Call your local pest exterminator. Never had squirrels, but has a raccoon in my workshop attic. Getting rid of the raccoon was easy. What it left behind was a mess.

I had this issue last fall.  You hire a wild animal trapper so they can trap the tree rats.  Once trapped they will release them 3 to 5 miles away from your home.

I live in a historic home, which means we have no attic (no basements either here in the Southwest).  However, we do get packrats, which I am certain do nothing positive.  When I was younger I used posion and was very proud of myself for how easy it was to get rid of them.  However, as I get a bit older (wiser?) I dont like the chance the posion can impact the environment (stray animals, large birds of prey eat the dead rat, kills them or their offspring...).  I use baited traps now.  More mess to deal with, but I feel better about it.

Hav-A-Heart Traps are the best, but first you need to seal off their ingress/egress point.
