Without these ventures the dues would likely be higher.

Lots of things at play that keep the dues from growing higher than they are.

The more people that make money, the better for the economy. As long as they provide quality and useful services to their members, i don't care if they make a profit.

BILL CHERRY I believe it is okay as long as they give it back to the membership.

I don't think they should be profitable.  Also I think their books should be made available to the members.  I often wonder what salaries they pay.

It is an individual decision for each association to decide whether they want to be non-profit or for-profit.  Different tax rules in Canada or the USA, whichever applies, are applicable for each and it needs to be clear what the decision is.  It is essential that non-profits do not taint their status as non-profits under the Internal Revenue Code (USA) or the Income Tax Act (Canada).

Good Monday morning Bill. No, I do not think they need to turn a profit.

Thought they are set up as non-profits? All that extra money goes for programs, marketing and educational etc. Or am I wrong?

Within reason I think it is fine. The money belongs to the Association (Members) and we use our for community projects, PR, supporting industrial growth and Member Education of which most is free to the membership.
