I would not use a public forum to admonish them, I would send them a private message.

they should NOT have done that, James.... that happened to me once, and I was pissed....I said compliment rather than complement....they clearly told me I was wrong and gave definitions....I was soooo freaking angry....I didn't delete the comment.... I let everyone know what an A hole that person was....can you detect a bit of my anger!!! sorry....

James -- it should be done privately -- email or phone call.

I typically ignore them.  There are some members who have so many, I'd be sending emails all day long.  Other times, I may send a quick email to alert them if I know the person.

I fix the problem ASAP and thank them.  There are tactful ways to let others know when there is a goof.  No need to be rude, crude or a jerk about it.  I prefer being notified via a private notice.

I think it is arrogant to comment that way. It is just like correcting someone to their face about mispronouncing a word. Read the comment, look at the validity or contribution to the stream, and mind your own business.

I catch online news reporters made spelling errors all the time. I contact them privately and they fix it right away. So they will shine.  

With realtors some do not spell well. "I sail homes. It effects the price of holmes."  Those who pick on a realtor is likely to be another realtor or a realtor hater.

James, I think the proper and polite thing to do would be to send you a private message. We all make mistakes. I don't blame you for deleting the comment, I would have done the same. 

If you are playing in the public forum where folks are falsely empowered and in search for some form of relevance, you need to know they are looking to pounce.  That is the way it is.

If you have thin skin, this may not be the sandbox for you.

Some folks life is so shallow that the misuse or there and their sends them into a volatile state or irrational desperation.  Just place that label on the citizen of diminishing significance and move on.

Just make certain you don't become one of them.

In a world with small touchy laptop keys and big fingers, it happens. It is more WRONG to leave a comment there is a spelling error than to make it. a private message at least is more welcome. This new spell check misses lots of errors btw, The spelling police find me as well

I am the queen of misspelled.  Especially if I am on my phone posting!

People like that have nothing better to do.  Don't let them get under your skin.  Your energy can be used in a positive direction versus negative.

The hardest thing now a days is communication and getting the message across correctly.  Each generation has multiple versions of slang and short cuts.  Especially with texting and snap chatting.

No, I do not comment on spelling errors.  I make a lot of spelling errors myself.

What I don't understand, unless it's something crucial and not just a post, why point it out at all.  Sometimes, spelling errors or grammar errors are just typos, a momentary brain fart or your fingers are moving faster than your brain.  I see mistakes often but never felt the need to correct the person and I'm sure I've made my share.  I know I've made some and thought, "I know better than that."

I went inside a bank a few months ago, and while talking with a teller, she kept pronouncing Arkansas as Ar - Kansas.  My first thought was, "Wow, never heard anyone seriously say it that way." Then, "Poor girl, she doesn't know any better." Never once did I think to correct her, I didn't want to embarrass her.  Also, on forums like this, I just don't see a need to. However, if I could not resist the urge, then it should be done in private. 

James, the polite and kind thing to do would be to contact you via phone, email or text and let you know.  My friends have been kind enough to help me with my many gaffs. 

We are all human and make mistakes and forget that when we point an index finger there sre three pointing back at us.

If it is a public facing blog, and if it would affect how the writer is perceived, I will send a private note and would appreciate the same in reverse.  Also, if a link seems to be broken, etc.    I always wish to help our members look as professional as possible.

If it is members only, I don't bother.

I send a private message. I've never made anyone wrong. I suggest they take a look at [fill in the blank] in the post. Most appreciate it and thank me for letting them know.  I do not call people out or correct them in any way ...

Privately or not at all, depending on how egregious the error is and how well I know the person. 

Hi, I would propably shoot the agent a friendly e-mail..   to let him/her know about the correction needed.

As I get older, I make mistakes I never made 5 years ago (I'm 56 and a half).  I realize now I'm not as good as I used to be, so I tend to re-read every word I've written, two or three times, before selecting the "post' button.  But I still make mistakes.  I see it a lot with the rest of you, and figure stuff happens, especially if you're 50, or so.  If I was a Professional Writer, I'd wait until the following day prior to pressing "post", because that's when I catch most of my mistakes.

I probably would not say anything, but if I did, it would be in a private message and not in the comments field.  

James, If it's someone I know or read regularly, I'd send them a private message if I thought it was serious or made them look bad. Putting it into the comments is being a jerk publicly and makes you look like one.

I just correct it in my head and keep moving...  If there are too many errrors then I have to stop reading because that is annoying and just shows they did not proofread!!

Most of the time I'd simply ignore it. We all make mistakes. However, if the comment was written by someone I know, and I know that they would be embarrassed by it, I'd write a private note. 

One only hope that someone would be professional and polite when pointing out a material error.  I wouldn't bother with a couple of transposed letters.  I think for most if is it isn't "if" we ever will make a mistake but "when".  The old rule of "do on to others" certainly applies here. If someone is pointing out petty mistakes they probably have nothing better to do and aren't worth a second thought.

I ignore spelling and grammatical errors. They are common and I just don't have the time.

James Dray Nothing, there are many times my fingers forget how to spell.

Gentle reminders; I agree with Richard Weeks. Personally, I'd want to be furgivon my $pell chex type-o's,  but I do want to know if I've made grammatical errors in a private message. Spell check is a button I forgot to push and possibly a missed keystroke or incorrect Siri translation. Grammer is from my mind and needs to improve with gentle reminders.

Don't let them rent space in your head James, let it go. As bloggers & authors we need to have thicker skin as we dare to put it out there. We're going to "suffer the slings and arrows of "nobler" men".

You should be thankful when errors are brought to your attention. You can always delete the comment after the correction.
