Get pre approved first. That is what I would say. 

Pick a knowledgeable agent and stick with them; do not drive around and call on signs; it will only waste time and increase the frustration level. And most of all; be patient with the search process, but be ready to place an offer when the right home fitting most of the needs and wants appears.

take time to pick an agent and then trust him/her and take the time to get a good lender - not an on line lender

 Get a home inspection after you have been preapproved.

When you find the home you "love", make that offer! If you don't, it will be gone in short order in this market. Some buyers keep making less than committed offers thinking they can get a deal, then lose out. How often can you truly fall in love? Do you really want to "settle" for your fifth or sixth love?

Don't max out your qualified payment, stay within a reasonable budget.

Whatever your weekest category is in buying a home, find an agent that can help offset that weakness (i.e. understanding finance, new construction, schools, 1031 exchanges, income properties, vacation properties, commercial real estate, etc.)  Working with specialists costs the buyer the same as working with a generalist, so why not?

Just one piece ... I'm not biting on this.  One piece of advice for a new buyer is just not enough

listen closely to what I am suggesting you do, and then DO IT.

Do not make a decision based solely on emotion.  Weigh out your options carefully and listen to the advice of a good Realtor.

How are you planning on paying for the home?  If cash - Can you provide proof of funds to accompany your offer?  If Financing - Have you had a conversation with a lender to help narrow your search to homes that fit your budget?   

Be patient and do not buy the first home your see.

Get to you lender or bank and get your lender letter. This gives you an advantage over other buyers and then you are ready to buy the home you really want to buy.
