I have learned that if you hold battery by 2 fingers and drop to table..the good one will stand up and the bad one will fall down. Do not lift high from table...maybe an inch or so.
Have you ever heard of that?

We have digital voltmeter. I taught my children at early stage how to test them write on it "BAD". As I recall that is how they learned to write very early on.
As to my wife, I gave up. We do it for her.

They have testers, or you can stick them in a device and see if it works.

Ginger Harper I never heard of the drop test before. Does the battery fall over because all of the electrons are depleted?

I ALWAYS wait for the power grid to go down the test the one by one..in the dark of course, only to realize they were in the drawer waiting for the next electronic and hazardous materials pick up by the city.
All good batteries should be in the refrigerator or still in a sealed package. That is a hard lesson to learn when the evacuation siren is sounding.

If they are not in the package they came in I would automatically throw them out.

No easy answer to this, at least not to my knowledge. Put them in a device.

Hubby has a volt meter that test the strength. Otherwise I would throw Thames away when taken out of device .

Ginger,
I had not heard of your ways of testing batteries. I have been told if you keep them in the refrigerator they will stay fresher...not sure if that is true. A

I'm assuming these are batteries you haven't used and you're wondering if they're still good. Some batteries have an expiration date on them or one on the package. But they're probably still good past that date, just won't last as long in use. Easiest way to know is put them in a device and see if they work.
