I have never make it a practice to give closing gifts. However, many real estate professionals in our area do give gifts after the settlement.

I give the atomic clocks that tell inside and outside temperature and humidity and moon phase. I like to give something with shelf life.

I dont know if it "makes a difference" or not either John McCormack. I simply feel it is professional and curtious. I dont follow up with clients once we close, I know many agents do either by mail, email news letter, etc. I am fortunate to have an unusal name and I really deliver and bring it for each client. So much so, I have found past clients are loyal, referring my name and number when they can. I like the cutting board idea James Dray, something they may have for a very long time and a nice memory. I may consider start doing that or something similar Vs a gift card. Thanks!

Not in the past several years and we haven't seen that it makes any difference.

I usually do and I'll make it a different gift if I know enough about the clients to personalize the choice. For example once I paid for the final cleaning for a seller that was short on cash before closing. But everyone appreciates a gift card!
