I love a yellow house- would actually love to live in a yellow house. I think a lavender house would be a difficult house and when we lived next to a turquoise house in Gainesville Fla even as an eight year old I thought that was an unfortunately house.

We sold a deep purple house with pink shutters that was on the market by with another Realtor for a long time. Our client was from out of the country and thought it was a remarkable color. Proves there's something for everyone!

Ugh! How about homes with dark interiors, such as dark brown wood paneling or dark, dull surfaces in a home with poor window location.
Homes like those are hard to photograph (it takes light to photograph a subject, right?) and are also tough to sell.

Pink with black and orange trim!
other than that color doesn't get in the way a lot.

See I was just going to say I hate yellow houses as they were popular 'lucky' in the 70's supposedly. They just don't age well ....
Hardest color to sell was a pepto bismol pink ranch foreclosure that I tried to sell. Damn ugly, that's what it was!
I did write a post once about Benjamin Moore's Butt Ugly Blue ......

I'm not sure what is the best to sell, but I know ugly when I see it. Around here we have a lot of stucco homes. Having a stone, brick or wood facia or accent on the front really helps the home look a lot better.

Its not only the color of the house you want to sell, but also in the neighborhood. I had a listing next door to a hideous lavender house, on what would have been a half million dollar street and it took 3 years to sell that house. More than a few buyers commented on the big purple home....ugh

Paul, pink and Smurf Blue are two hard colors to sell. A 2,500 square foot two story home in our market is easily $8,000+ for a paint job and it is something that most buyers don't want to deal with if the colors are not to their liking. It seems like the more personalized the exterior paint color the less likely the seller is to paint it or offer a credit.

Dark blue, purple or pink are hard sells. Yellow, red, tan, green (not too dark) and of course white are easier sells.

Bright yellows and blue houses do not sell well in my market. Greens and browns and ever deep reds are doing well. I work with one builder that is adventurous and is not afraid to try bold colors. The buyers are responding positively.

Yes an odd color or a color that is uncharacteristic to the neighborhood can be detrimental

We had a pink house in town. Now it's blue. A nice shade of blue. It was known as the pink house. It was a rental. A friend of mine actually rented it. The color didn't keep it from being rented. I've never really had this come up.

If the color is pink it might create an issue for the buyer depending on the location. If it's Fire Island it would probably be ok.

Hi Paul Henderson the only color home that we consistently have an issue with is a Blue home.... that's the truth!!

Paul Henderson I tell my buyers to look beyond that. However, how many other agents do that? So, answer is - yes, it does hurt, if the color is something that most buyers will not like.

A client of mine bought a red house and then told me that red houses are the hardest to sell... His dad owns a siding company- might be some truth to that- we bought the house at a great price and he is planning on painting it!

Homes painted purple, turquoise and maize are most difficult to sell IMO, yet, a smart buyer wouldn't have any issue with the color of the home.

Dark or medium blue turns off most buyers. Very light blue is pleasing. Paint Mfgrs. shouldn't even make pink paint:)

Dark or medium blue is a turn off for most buyers. Very light blue is usually okay. Paint manufacturers shouldn't even make pink paint:)

Paul Henderson ....I would have to say purple or pink ....luckily I have not had one yet!
Great question!

It's all earth tones in Albuquerque. Anything bright sticks out like a sore thumb and gets no action.

Paul ~ I taught an MCE class a few years ago, that addressed this very question. The study, done by a company that I can't remember, revealed that blue houses were the hardest to sell as opposed to white houses which appealed to the masses.

I have seen some HOA subdivision with some of the ugliest colors. i hate the ones that are magenta and cobalt blue, mustard yellow with brown trim. Everyone has a preference and you don't dare say anything. Just show the house and hope they make an offer. You don't have to live in it!

Here on the beach, everyone wants the bright, cheery, beachy colors.... The most difficult color house I ever sold was Barn Red :-)
Yellow and Carolina Blue are real popular in our area and my house is yellow.

Here in the woods, all too many homes (in my opinion) have brown stained siding. If there's not enough sun, the home can appear smaller because it fades into the background - yet, people still buy them all the time.
I'd have to agree the pink/turquoise/blue/purple exterior paint colors are harder to sell, particularly if they stand out as exceptions compared to their neighbors.
Like Lise Howe I just love yellow homes - in fact have owned two and am still living and loving one of them. Have a client's yellow house up for sale now and am expecting multiple offers today!

Paul, I had a rental townhome last year and the owner had painted the living room, master bedroom and bath hot pink. She had purple drapes. Most renters objected to the colors. I had her paint it beige and I got it rented right away.

Yes, the outside color does have a substantial effect. Especially when buyers think of the cost and the trouble to repaint! I have a listing with salmon pink on the outside and turquoise trim. No matter how I take the pictures, the home is still salmon pink. It's an awesome home and the owners just have their own flair for life!

Purple will cause most buyers to calculate the price of painting the house and deduct it, no matter how new the purple paint is.

Bath, ME is filled with historic homes, in historic hues. Here, I don't think it is so much the home's color, as it is the complexity of the paint job. We've had highly decorated Queen Anne's or Gothic Revivals that were hard sells because buyers viewed the elaborate exterior color schemes as too expensive to maintain. There was a Victorian several years back that the Seller re-painted, from a multi-colored, highly detailed scheme, to grey with white trim and then it sold.

The dark brown with "off gold" accents is a dreary out of date color here as well as the dark brick with almost a rust color paint. They definitely scream 70's and buyers seeking the new look without having to paint right away are turned off.

Many years ago, I had a listing with gray interior walls that was hard to sell as many people said it was kind of depressing. Now, several of the new home builders in our area are going with light gray interiors. I just say stay neutral on the subject after I had a client select lavender walls and raspberry carpet for a custom home that I thought would be horrific, but it was magnificent.

In all the years I have been in Real Estate in one role or another, I have noticed a blue home, carpet, paint - seems to be a color that people either love or hate.

Blue is, IMO, a color for interior rooms, especially bedrooms.
There was a luxury home in Bowie that was simply impossible to sell. They sold with a negotiated $25,000 price reduction to pay for the repainting of the exterior.
I'm in a rural area and the best colors are white, off white. Also popular are the ochre colors in all hues. Very popular in Early America.

Fortunately our local area has fairly strong city regulations which help with property values by enforcing the rules regarding colors, upkeep of homes and more. I have seen some homes however that attempt to go with approved colors and end up in hues of pinks and mauve which are deal killers for an exterior color. Some colors also fade out to these shades in the Southern California sun so one must also be careful about the original color choice. So I'd say pinks and any pastel color for a home is not a good choice.

I live on the Outer Banks of NC, a beach resort community. During the boom, we saw a lot of builders begin using Caribbean colors on their new construction homes. I find that it's tough work to sell a pink house. :)
Besides, our environment (salt air, high humidity, etc) is hard on deeply saturated colors, such as dark blues and greens. They just don't hold up over time and need repainting sooner than the beige and other natural tones.
Neutral beiges appeal to the most buyers in my market.

Hi Paul. I've always heard "Buyer's blues" --- don't paint your house blue! I sold a blue house a few years ago, the first thing the new owners did was paint it.

Across the street from the 'Babe Ruth' house was a Florida bungalow painted deep space blue then lime green trim and with a matching lime green mailbox. Yahoo!
Folks leaving the house stood at the end of the sidewalk FROZEN.
When I incorporated the retired art teacher, a 40 year resident of the community, into the back story, the issue was resolved. The prospect buyers actually crossed the street to chat with her about the community.
A popular color in FL is 'Salmon' that to the eyes of those moving from the land of the frozen choosen is translated PINK. Selling a PINK house is not easy.

Believe it or not have seen more than one purple up here out in the woods. Even if only driving by to another it tends to set a poor feel for the neighborhood overall. Mark

I think more than it huirts, it attracts the buyers who like outside the box homes. I just sold a half a million dollar home that was olive green with lavendar shutters and a deep purple front entry. Not just the door either, the whole front entry...
