I was in a meeting where my client was signing a lease agreement. The husband and wife landlords were present and the husband said he thought I'd be a great match for their son.
He was telling me what a great guy he was and that he'd like to set up a meeting. I said his son sounds wonderful, but my husband doesn't like me to date.
We all had a good laugh.

I connected with someone on Match.com many years ago. We never actually met in person but talked on the phone and emailed. When it came time for him to buy a home, he asked me to help. Of course, I did. So his home buying is why we finally met. It was all very professional. I took him to dinner to celebrate the closing. Not uncommon for me to do with clients. He invited me back to his house to see what he had done after he moved in. Big mistake. And I would not call that encounter a date. I've not seen him since. It is my policy not to date clients. Of course, if the right exception comes along ... I just might make it Never say never ...

Not me - but I will watch these answers! I think it is a tricky practice that I would avoid but I have been married for 37 years and only in real estate for 26!

Ok. So, I've been in this business for 10 years and I've heard it all, or I thought I did, until a few months ago, when I attended an open house and overheard an agent telling another agent what her "duties" were on the team.
But to keep this PG 13, I myself, a hopeless romantic, still thinks I met my soul mate two years ago. But the timing wasn't right..My married friends, that truly know what love stands for, kept telling me... "you will know it when it happens...." Well it happen. So what know? So, Yes, Kathleen Daniels, Never say never.... I will tell you my story a little later. As for, Jill Murty, did their son really sound wonderful? I'm single :) My opinion, it can't be any worse then finding someone online! First and foremost, they know how your schedule on a daily basis. No big surprise on working odd hours. Nothing worse than taking a client out to dinner for their celebration dinner, when a boyfriend, now ex, shows up making a scene in a restaurant! Drama! I don't do drama. I have enough of it with this career at times. I'll let you use your imagination. Second, they have a job because you know their financial background enough to at least put down 3% for an earnest deposit. No surprise there. You probably already met most of his family too, because they all have their own opinions as well. As a matter of fact, you probably know more about him in the home buying or selling process than any new relationship you start. I have a few girlfriends that met their husbands during their real estate process. Now living in L.A. nothing is off the table! Sometimes I have to wear a fake wedding ring so guys, and sadly, even husbands, don't hit on me. And finally, which brings up my next question for Bruce Walter, lol... What would you do to get that $20 Million dollar listing? (As one of my ex's said, "I can be a team player if need be.")

Well since there are no takers yet, perhaps the question needs to be re-phrased:
How many real estate professionals who were already dating or married had an affair with a client?

Never been married, but I have done mortgages for a few people I've dated in the past. If things are friendly post-breakup, I don't find it difficult to separate personal and professional, and when it comes to loans, I always keep it professional.

I've seen agents flirt to get the business, but let's face it, most agents I know are settled in their personal life.

Kristen Correa, I just laugh with comments I hear in this career and walk away. None of my business. No need to judge anyone or how they do business. I have enough to worry about on my end. Babysitiing my clients is sometimes a full time job, but my #1 priorty is having a smooth transaction on my end. I love what I do and I make it look easy for all my clients.

Jane Kalinowsky - The meeting was a number of years ago.
The son did sound wonderful, which for me is a Mr. Responsible with solid values and a great sense of humor.
The parents were delightful and funny and certainly made terrific in-laws for their future daughter-in-law.

The thought never entered my mind although I have seen the dating side ruin a lot of marriages. I keep looking over the fence, comparing and wondering what they're seeing. The grass is always greener right where I am.

Jane. It's all fun and games 'til your follow up comment: "I attended an open house and overheard an agent telling another agent what her "duties" were on the team." If you are referring to possibly witnessing what could be trafficking or solicitation, just to be safe, I would actually report that pronto. And I'm not talking about to the California Realtor board. Not cool.

OK. FUN! Agree. No. Never dated, flirted with or married a client. Certainly laughed at a few who tried who were 80 with their golden anniversary wife by their side laughing about it, too. Usually Latin, what's up with that? But as a teenager I worked for a Christian camp. We were 17 and hot and there was a strict no dating camp instructors or attendees policy. "WHATEVER!" I can't count using all my fingers and all my toes all the successful young marriages and children born there. And I need zero digits to count the divorces or prayer requests for cheaters. So there. In my best teenager I told ya so voice.

In the real estate business 29 years and married 22 years. I honestly can't remember if I did or didn't. I don't think so.

No, but AFTER closing escrow it might be possible if the interest is mutual. NOT BEFORE, business is business.

My husband was a personal trainer that I hired at the beginning of 2004 to train me to run my first marathon. We've been married for 8 years next month. So technically I was the client in that scenario. He's been the best person I've ever hired!

This is a most interesting question - real estate with a juicy spin - kudos. I have a cousin that met her husband just this way, when she was in her 20's, a long time ago.
