I think the key is being a great listener, and not an advice giver.  This is not what the job description is.  Folks say a lot of stuff sometimes just to say it...A

The last appointment I had, I knew the woman had some real issues.  She didn't drive.  She's 45-years old and there's a reason why a woman in her mid-40's doesn't drive.  Health, license revoked ???  I didn't want to find out.

Mostly sounding board, but I am really good at figuring out what drives people. 

When dealing with the most important asset of most citizens who are engaged in a highly stressful process, you better have some soft skills at your command.

Do this well and the client will be better able to see the mountains you have moved on their behalf.

Social worker, referee, umpire, contractor, negotiator and then Realtor

Mirela, great question that we can all relate to. Sometimes we do run the risk of getting too involved with the customers "other" issues.  At that time, it's important to take a step back and remember we are "just" the Realtor.

I believe at some point we all, as Realtors, hear just about everything.  Difficult not to.  Best we can do is be good listeners and let someone else give the advice or counsel,  other than buying a home.  Mark

I learned a long time ago not to be a social worker, therapist, etc. But it's a learning process to figure out how and where to draw lines.

Yes we know what you're getting at, Mirela. I'm not my client's social worker or their counselor. Maybe their coach in addition to their agent, but we should have good boundaries or we'll get enmeshed in the personal rather than the professional role.

Well, we are kind of having many hats. In addition to that, some of us have skills of marketer, PR, blogger, stagger, photographer, networker, savvy negotiator, TC, and many more. You have to wear multiple hats as an agent and be ready to educate, empathize, and encourage.
