As long as it is tastefully done. It is probably one of the best tools for the friends and family of the deceased to be updated. You can also create a "Memory" page for the person, where photos can be uploaded, info on services, and enables people to post comments on there. May be very healing for the family.

I think, that some kind of message should be posted. And maybe a profile should be closed or deleted. It is really creepy to get all those ''happy birthday! xoxo'' messages from strangers who just want to be nice...

I agree with Sharon ONLY after the immediate family has been notified.

Thank you, all. Your comments helped a lot. I was having a problem with groping with this issue.

I think most people would not be offended and if the family approves I would say it was okay. I would not do it however.

Yes. People do it all the time. Even funeral homes have fb pages that reportss deaths. We have groups the notify me of deaths of people that went to same high school, etc. Even the newspapers report them on social media. Most times the family has already given their consent to the funeral home.

Yes, I will do that if I know the person so more people find out about and pay their respects. I get a lot of thanks when I do that

Are you related?
I think, that it should be disclosed somewhere in the profile( if you want to keep the page active). People can be very obnoxious on FB, posting self promotions, spam, tagging, poking, etc.

I don't see an issue with it. Someone may be glad you did, so they can send a sympathy card to a loved one.

Nora Sims it's OKAY to post it - however, make it a point to call / inform the closest family members first - they should not get this news from Social Media.

I don't believe I would do that, however I have seen several posted by others.

Who is family? Our uncle died, and just because we live states away, we find out about it on facebook. Is that right?

Someone here on ActiveRain just let people know of her relative's death on FB. I think the family should be the first to discuss it if they feel it is appropriate, and then I would ask them before I stated anything, too!

I have been in this situation personally when my husband died. I don't think it is appropriate without the family's permission. There are times when immediate family find out through that medium instead of the way they should and I think that is wrong and disrespectful.

I agree with Shannon and Nora. I would also ask the family's permission.
