I can't help but disagree with the rationality of the benefit outweighs the penalty, so therefore it must be ok.  If something is wrong (morally, ethically, legally), then it's wrong and you shouldn't do it.

No.  I go by the quote "Character is the person you are when no one's watching". Sacrificing my character isn't worth it.  That's the reason the Patriots dynasty will always have 'spygate' attached to them  - they're a helluva football team, but not an example of doing it the right way.

I try not to do anything that I would be embarrassed about if it became public knowledge.  I said "try" because I can't always live up to it.

Writing on this site and others can be great for a lot of reasons.  One of them is that it gives readers an opportunity to learn more about the writers.  In that respect, I think this thread was extremely informative.

You know when I wrote this question, I had many other answers going through me head

1.  why does any team in the nfl even have their hands on the ball out side of game time.  Hell its a professional organization, I think both teams can trust the ref. to bring adequate game balls.  Takes team out of equation

2.  Why is it that the penalties in this country sometimes do not seem severe enough.  I recall illegal toxic waste being dumped by a company long ago (maybe this was a movie), and they were fined, but it was a FRACTION of what they made.

I think over all most of us realtors are good people, and do well and follow rules and regulations. (maybe not agent who got caught on video stealing drugs during a showing).  I just was wondering why I guess that sometimes on the bigger venues (super bowl, exxon, BP,..................) the penalty does not seem a deterrent.

No, because I believe in ethics and the golden rule.  If what they did was intentional, they cheated.

In this case, they should move forward until the team is cleared of wrongdoing or make them forfeit the game if they cheated.

I can see this as economic question as well.  So I heard the penalty is $25,000.  Maybe they assess $25K for each ball, so 12 balls at $25K a piece so $300,000.  They stand to make WAY more money than the cost of the penalty.  I would likely do it all day, as they benefit far out weights the cost.  I read where each player on losing team makes $46,000 and $92,000 on the winning team.  Of course that does not include the coach, staff and owners, which I'm sure make their money as well.
