Susan Haughton I agree, I usually won't tag someone unless I am responding directly to them. I choose to "like" the comments that people make on my posts as a thank you, rather than thanking everyone separately. If I question is asked, I will tag the person and answer it. I think we get points now for tagging someone, so that might be a reason that we see more tagging going on.

We appreciate every one who writes a comment. Yes, I push the like button. They are taking the time to read the post and comment, and I think that is a very nice thing to do. A

Yes Debbie Gartner , I have stopped using the Q & A section as much because of this sorting issue. I agree that it is very difficult to find things. I usually tend to change the sort to newest questions. For seeing answers to my questions, I have to keep the notification email that I get, then find it amongst the questions I have asked, luckily, I haven't asked too many questions, so it's not too difficult to find.

Yes, I think the tagging feature is over used. It should be used when you really wnat to alert some or for a super special comment. but, aa a general thank you, no it's a distraction and it's just calling for attendion. I tend to ignore most of those now and it's a bit like the boy who cried wolf and now many are missing the relevant tags.
Now that they are awarding pts, more people are using it and doing for the pts. I generally use the thumbs up as a thank you for commenting
BTW, on here, the tags aren't working. And, the comments are all screwy/mixed up, so I'm often tagging on the Q&A since they aren't getting notes and to clarify who I'm talking to ...and to give the person a bonus 2 pts wo/ it flooding their email.

I have read a few posts on this subject...some members don't like the tagging feature or think it is overused. While it is not necessary to tag someone in a comment on their own post (because then they get 2 emails alerting them to the comment and the tag), I do like comments/tagging when there is a worthwhile reason to continue the conversation.
I don't understand the point of responding to every comment individually without tagging, though, because very few people are ever going back to the thread and read it unless they are tagged and know it is there.
I typically "like" every comment on the thread, and tag if I want to say something to an individual. I prefer reciprocal comments, anyway, to a "thank you" kind of comment on the thread - unless I am tagged and know it's there.

It's greatly appreciated when someone "mentions" you in a comment, although not everyone has time to write comments, answer questions and mention others. A "like" is positive feedback. AR can be addictive, and if we spend too much time asking, answering and mentioning, then we are keeping ourselves from helping others find the home of their dreams.

Gabe Sanders I am with you, but I am torn on whether to tag everyone on my thank you's. I will usually just "like" their comment as a way of saying thank you for commenting on my post. Hopefully I don't offend anyone that would prefer to be mentioned and thanked personally.

Actually, Brian it doesn't look like they've fixed the tagging thing on here. I see the points for the tag when you tagged me, but no notification and no way to click on the questions to find it. You have to hunt & peck which is quite stupid.

thx for the heads up Brian. I didn't realize that had fixed that, so I'll have to minimize when I use tagging on here.
The answers are sorted by # of likes. If the # of likes are tied, then it's randomized amound the same # of likes. I find this order kind of frustrating and very hard to follow many of the conversations. It's also challenging to find the new comments to respond to (if you are the one who wrote the question). It's even worse if there are more than 20 answers as the new ones don't show and you need to select "show all comments."

Debbie Gartner the tagging on here seems to be working now, I do remember that it didn't really work at first. I thought they also fixed the screwy/mixed order for comments, but I still see a little bit of that going on.

It is a little strange when they call you out by full name, but in the end, it is nice! It is a good way to see that folks are actively reading your questions and comments.

I like the feature, but think too many people way overuse it. It's a great feature when someone leaving a comment leaves a question in that comment. That way the person knows that the question was answered. So overall I guess I lke this feature.

Comments are always nice but I think the tagging feature is overused.
If you really want to pay it forward, re-blog lots of blogs, introduce new members by blogging about them, blog about members when they reach milestones, and 'like' every blog you visit and 'like' all of the comments by other bloggers as you visit posts.

Debbie Gartner I don't seem to get a notification on ActiveRain for any sort of activity within the Q & A Section, but I seem to get email notifications. I agree, it is kind of a pain and still has some quirks that need to be worked out. I hope they get it together eventually!

I "like" every comment someone makes on my posts and then try to reciprocate on their blog. I also usually acknowledge or answer commenters in a comment but I don't always tag.

I would consider likes to be a gentle nod of one's head, where tagging is like addressing someone in a conversation that has several people involved. Social media is similar to a cocktail party!
