The points are generally just for fun and don't matter unless you are under 500,000 pts. Once you get to 500,000 membership is free and it goes down $10/month for every 100.000 pts.

Points are an interesting side-benefit, but not the be-all, end-all.

Well said, Dave.
ActiveRain has something to do with Game Theory.
It combines work and play in an elegant fashion.
The work side is blogging for industry.
The play side is blogging for the scoreboard.

I think the points enjoy participation. By nature people in the real estate business are competitive. By ranking people according to points, you encourage people to compete for those number one positions.

I agree. Getting a zillion points doesn't help if you don't get any calls from potential clients. Better to go for quality instead of quantity.

My point is to get to 500k and not to be charged any more. Yet, I'll still be blogging and commenting after that not for points but for exposure and marketing.

Also: Points determine where your name appears in the listing of members in your city and state. On the off-hand chance that consumers may look at that list when searching for an agent, all other things being equal, I suppose it is better to be nearer the top of the list than not.

I love the points because despite getting business from A/R, I tend to be an inconsistent blogger. The points keep me focused on achieving something and achieving business, while the primary goal, of course, is not something that happens every day, isn't that gratifying except on the days it happens.
Points satisfy the need for gratification; I do something, therefore, I get something back for doing something. Even though I know the value is in the long range value, I still like the thrill of seeing the points add up. It keeps me more engaged on the site.
I'm over 500,000 points now, but it was also highly motivating to earn the free account.

Points do tend to meet the ego needs of some members but they are not indicators of the quality of the blogging or the success of the bloggers.
