Our successful agents, and those we meet in our travels, can be very different in their approach and personality. However, they have several common traits:
1. They really work harder than other agents. No lip service, they deliver.
2. They are highly responsive. They answer calls, emails, and texts promptly. Always.
3. They are leveraging the internet correctly. Sure, almost all listings are on "the web" but the web is a crowded place. The top agents do more than just MLS and bland, untargeted Facebook posts.
4. Honesty is required, as is candor. But I consider this a given. The dishonest generally don't last long and are rarely outstanding (or even in business) over time.
5. Passion for their work and community, but it must be backed with effort. I know lots of dreamers that are passionate with their dreams and excuses.
6. They list and sell. By listing , they know their local inventory better than those who only list or only sell.
As we don't enlist many agents in each market, we consider these factors, and others, in each agent we meet that may be a current (or eventual) agent with our brokerages.
Hope this is helpful!

Honesty is the first thing that comes to me ....It's the most important. There are many others that come to mind, but Honesty just seems to stand out!
Great question!

Agreed, Lamar. Once the trust has been violated the damage is done and the agents career is toasted. In this business no one gets a second chance to make a first impression. Nice to hear from you.

Trust and honesty. If you can be trusted or be honest, nothing else matters. Of course, these traits should be used in anything we do.

I've seen many great, outstanding agents fall from grace because of dishonest practice and fraud, Glenn. Agents whose integrity you may never question. Need some proof ?

The agent should know the market , should be a good negotiator, should be good at marketing properties if listing properties, be good in marketing off line and online as some consumers may not be tech savy. They should be able to communicate using the telephone or internet and email and text depending on what the consumer wants. The agent should be ethical and honest and treat their clients fairly. Most good agents go above and beyond .

You have to have the ability to read your clients and understand their needs. You also have to be honest and communicate well and very frequently with your cleints. You should also be extremely knowledgeable in the real estate transaction and be able to explain to them in a way that a fifth grader could understand the process.

Determination to succeed is a great asset, however before this, to be outstanding is not only to deliver the best service to your clients but to also have the patience to listen to what their needs are. All situations are different and a client knows when you are truly there for them. One more thing, keep updated in everything. Your clients derserve to have all the knowledge you can provide and this means to review what you have learned so that you will not falter when questions are asked. Remember...you are working for them.

Great answer, Ann. Being patient with a client is important. Sometimes that means possessing a high tolerance for pain. :-)
