Here I am on Baltimore's waterfront with a movie star!  I was leading a walking tour of Fell's Point for a group and saw Gene Hackman leaving Henderson's Wharf, a hotel on Fell Street on the eastern end of the neighborhood.  Henderson's is an old building, constructed for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, called the "Best and Only" by B&O afficionados. Now a non-smoking hotel, Henderson's was built as a tobacco warehouse, the only property owned by the B&O on the north side of the river, which was in the main the Pennsylvania Railroad's territory. The B&O's large yards were in Locust Point, near Fort McHenry, on the peninsula that separates the middle branch from the northwest branch of the Patapsco River.  Demand for residences on the water is changing the face of the commercial waterfront.  Historically, piers have been reserved for maritime purposes, loading and unloading cargos in Baltimore's busy port.  Even today, the port is one of the top three employers in Baltimore.  Immigrants arriving in the 19th and early 20th centuries lived close to where they worked, and many worked in port-related commerce. It is ironic to me that these people worked and saved so they could move out of the densely packed city to suburban neighborhoods, and their offspring are returning to live in the city.
