Get to Know Sheila Giovan

I was very fortunate to be born in Hollywood, California where my parents had chosen to live in Southern Califiornia. The Fifties were the best of times in the greater Los Angeles area. The life afforded children the privilege of being outside in the sun and water and freedom.  I have very fond memories of going to the beach each weekend when we lived in Manhattan Beach. Since then, I have had a lifelone devotion to the ocean  and to boating first in Newport Beach and then here in Sonoma County as well as Discovery Bay. My parents were adventuresome and my sister and I were given horses to ride over the hills of Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills. My fondest memories  while living in Palos Verdes were the visits down the cliffs to the beach below and the Palos Verdes Swim Club, as well as the daily riding of my horse at the Palos Verdes Estates Stable. We enjoyed visiting with my mother's brothers families and often went boating in Balboa on their fishing boats and cabin cruisers.

In Junior High School my family moved to Palm Springs where we continued to spend all the afternoons riding the trails in the hills of Palm Springs. I attended a private school named Palm Valley School where I made life long friends. I graduated Valedictorian and I was accepted at U.C.L.A. My life changed dramatically going from a small private school to the exciting campus life at U.C.L.A. I can't describe what an enlightening experience it was for me to be exposed to so many new people from all over the world. I loved U.C.L.A. and I still participate in the Sonoma County Scholarship Committe for U.C.L.A.

Upon graduation from college, my best friend Sue Braufman and I spent three months in Europe and Israel. It was a world awakening experience for both of us. I still recall the different capitals, such as Rome and London and Paris and Jerusalem, as my favorite places exploding with new experiences such as the great art work in the Louvre and the gorgeous skyline of Paris. It was a kalidoscope of lights, beautiful people, young college people from all over the world.

For seven years after returning from Europe,  I worked for the City of Los Angeles as a Personnel Analyst and was respondable for hiring Police Officers. I especially liked the job because I ran all the interviews and oversaw the other required examinations. During this time I meet and fell in love with Peter Giovan, an Orthopedic Resident at L.A. County hospital. After a whirlwind romance we were married and moved to Palos Verdes. The best thing that happened was when I found out that I was pregnant with our son Michael. I became a stay at home mom. I never looked back since I loved being a mother. After three more years I had my second child Christina who has given me the best that life can offer. She and her husband have two children who I adore. My son Michael and his wife Kelley have a baby girl named Sophia who is one of my three favorite grandchildren.

I got ahead of myself, I forgot to mention that the family moved to Sonoma County where Peter opened up an orthopedic Practice with Dave Cousino. We settled first in Petaluma and built a custom home. Secondly, after seven years we moved to Bennett Valley in Santa Rosa and we built another custom home. I gained lots of experience in designing and choosing a good contractor. Both my children went to Montgomery High School where Michael was Valedictorian and both children went on to University of California in Berkeley. Christina gained national attention as All American Swimmer and received a swimming Scholarship from CAL. I was elected as President of the Medical Auxilary where I participated for over twenty years.

My greatest joy has been watching my children grow into caring and successful adults. And I especially am grateful for my new grandchildren. I have become the typical grandmother.  I really didn't think it would be so life changing to have my three and soon to be four grandchildren. I am just as sappy about my three grandchildren as all my friends had predicted.
