History of the Pineapple The pineapple is the international symbol of hospitality, welcome, customer service and good luck. The journey from uncommon fruit to a symbol of hospitality started over 500 years ago... In 1493, as Christopher Columbus continued to explore the "new world", he sailed to the Caribbean Island of Guadalupe and encountered a small native village. It was there that he was presented with this exotic fruit he had never seen before. This gift was given to him to make him feel welcome in their village. Columbus and his crew were amazed by this fruit that looked like a giant pine cone on the outside, but was more like an apple and so delicous on the inside. Columbus returned to Europe with this exotic fruit and presented it to the Monarchy. As pineapples were not native to Europe they soon became a commodity of royalty and were often given from one Monarch to another upon their meeting.

Fast forward several hundred years later to the days of the thirteen colonies in a young America. As the country was developing and sea captains would travel to the tropics, they would often return with a bounty of pineapples. It became customary for a sea captain to place a pineapple on a gate or fencepost in front of their home to alert their neighbors and friends that he had returned from his journey and you were welcome to stop by his home for a meal, conversation, or just some hospitality. In colonial America the primary source of entertainment was dinner parties and lively conversation. So you can see where being hospitable was a big deal and the pineapple on the signpost would literally imply that you are welcome...(Continued below)

Pineapples were still a rare treat and were often used at a dinner party to promote the hospitality of the host and hostess. Sometimes these "centerpiece" pineapples were rented and upon their return the following day were sold to wealthier colonists that would eat them that evening! Since then the pineapple has been reproduced on banister rails, fountains, above doorways, on corporate logos, and of course here at Long Island Property Shoppe; in the name of hospitality, welcome and the great customer service that awaits you!
