It's not all about the money! Some people look at me with disbelief when I say that, but it's true. This business is about changing lives. I used to work as a technical writer, publishing end-user documentation for some pretty sophisticated software. It was a thankless job in many ways, not the least of which was that users were more likely call support than read the documentation. I knew I made the right change after closing on a home with one of my first clients. We spent month working together with her lender to find her a home. At the end of the closing, we walked out of the parking lot to see that she had filled her car and was all set to move in. As she hugged us, we saw that she was tearing up a bit out of sheer joy. That is what this business is all about, making dreams come true. I can honestly say that in 15 years as a technical writer, I never, ever had a client tear up with joy when they opened the manual.

The president of a company for which I once worked spoke to us one day about his visit to a potential client. They went in for a sales presentation with the whole dog and pony show, lots of charts and lots of bells and whistles. About halfway through, the potential client stood up and said they were done. When the president asked why, the potential client replied that they didn't understand how his company worked and nothing they showed him was relevant. Rather than leave, the president ask the potential client to walk him through his business so he could understand it. When all was said and done, both parties were able to see how each could benefit from the other. I believe that as a real estate agent, I have to understand the needs of my clients before I can understand how I can be of service to them.

Like other top agents, I work hard to understand the needs of my clients. These needs differ depending on where they are in the life cycle. For first-time homebuyers, finding a home is only part of the equation. It is also important to understand what their plans are down the road. For example, do they both plan to work? Are they going to start a family? How will that affect their income? Helping these buyers answer these questions makes it easier to find a home in which they can grow, yet still manage with the life changes they plan.

For older clients, the needs change. Perhaps they now need more room. Or, less room now that the kids are gone to school. perhaps they need to be closer to work or want to be farther out. Maybe it is time to look for single-floor homes rather than multiple-floor dwellings. There are always questions to ask and answers to find, and doing so is what separates a good real estate agent from the pack.
