I've been selling homes since I graduated college about 25 years ago. Mortgage interest rates were about 18% back then, average home price was about 80k (I remember a prospect getting excited when I told him he can get about 70k for his house!). We couldn't wait for interest rates to hit 16% -- surely all the buyers will come out then, with a great rate like that! Oh, and remember the sales contract then? Two sides of an 11" page. No disclosure pages and addendums.
Well times have slowly changed and we hardly notice the changes: fax machines, computerized mls, photos in the mls, cell phones (my first cell phone charged a buck a minute!). I can't comprehend how we did business without all this. Things are still changine, but at a faster pace. Now we have to keep ahead of the curve or be left way behind.
I'm so grateful to all of my past clients that kept me going all this time. I love when I get to sell a second or third home to an previous buyer -- and now even homes to their children! After being in business this long, it's exhilarating to have to keep learning and reading and attending classes and seminars to keep growing and improving.
But the basic business has stayed the same: prospect; develop relationshisps; give outstading, honest service; and the rest just flows from that.
On my personal side: I've lived all of my life in Central NJ. I graduated from Rutgers College in the Rutgers Scholars Program with a degree in Economics. I've been married for 16 years to a former teacher and we have 5 children together. My oldest is my son, James, 13 and I have 4 younger girls, Bridget, Megan, Theresa and Monica. This business has allowed me to teach my children about honesty, service and daily commitment. As a family, we love camping, biking, hiking, geocaching, canoeing/kayaking and just about anything we can do outdoors -- we don't even own a TV! I'm also a Boy Scout Scoutmaster for my son's Boy Scout Troop -- I'm also the founder of the Troop (Troop 22 in Mercer County).
