original content: What is Plagiarism and Why You Should Avoid it Like the Plague! - 06/27/11 11:52 AM
Plagiarism is a topic that comes up repeatedly here on ActiveRain, and rightly so. With so many new members unfamiliar with proper Netiquette and acceptable publishing practices, it's a good thing to rehash such things regularly.
Just recently, a self-proclaimed 'social media manager' wrote an article that was posted on a popular business social network, BizNik. The article initially was well-received, garnering numerous positive comments.
Unfortunately, it was later determined that this article had been swiped (copied & pasted) almost verbatim from another member's blog. The site management decided to keep the article live as an example of what NOT to … (35 comments)

original content: "So, What's the Point?" The Genius and Curse of the ActiveRain Points System - 06/29/08 07:58 PM
It's time once again to play our game, "Name That Guideline!" And I'm your Host, ActiveRain Community Builder Rich Jacobson!...
We've been re-acquainting ourselves with the ActiveRain Community Guidelines and dissecting each one in sequential order. This week, we come to the following guideline:
The point system is intended to recognize the top professionals in our industry. Do not try to game the system. Points for blogging will only be awarded for majority original content. Since the very beginning of our Network, the point system has been the source of constant debate and criticism. Take a stroll with me down AR Memory … (141 comments)

original content: "Points vs. Non-Original Content" - Blog Tips for Rain Drips - 06/20/08 04:38 PM
Becoming a vested member of this community requires a very extensive learning curve. There are so many varying features and benefits to take advantage of in the Rain, newcomers find the task of getting their blog feet wet rather daunting. Even those of us who have been participating for some length many times overlook/neglect some of the more obvious nuances.
Allow me to share one such nuance....
You craft your latest blog post creation. You carefully finish formatting, inserting relevant graphics, using spell check (if it's working!), and you're ready to publish.
But on the way down to the "Post Blog Entry" … (62 comments)

original content: "When is Your Blog like a Toxic Waste Dump?" - Blog Tips for Rain Drips - 10/29/07 05:43 AM

Forget about Al Gore and all the alarming hype about Global Warming!
The real danger is a growing epidemic right here on the ActiveRain Network. More and more of our members are turning their blogs into a Toxic Waste Dump!
Rumor has it that ActiveRain will soon make the EPA's Worst Superfund Site List!
What are these deadly pollutants, you ask?
Well, instead of posting valuable relevant original content for consumers, many ActiveRain members are posting plagiarized (stolen cut & paste) articles to their posts.
Rather than generating content that attracts and engages potential clients in meaningful dialogue, Rainers are posting blatant and obsessive … (52 comments)

original content: Roxanne, Glamour Shots, and Casper the Ghost - Blog Tips for Rain Drips - 10/11/07 07:04 PM
In the movie, "Roxanne," Steve Martin plays the part of a small town fire chief who writes a bunch of mushy love letters for one of his fellow firefighters. The recipient of the letters, played by Daryl Hannah, is captivated by the words, but when she finally meets the fireman face-to-face, she quickly realizes the two don't match.
I remember when I first started my career in real estate back in Lawrence, Kansas. I was with a Realty Executives franchise (Realty Executives/Hedges Real Estate) that was owned by a good friend, Bryan Hedges.
Back then, real estate was all about the Agent. People would spend … (73 comments)
